Camp site in Tuscany

My wife has booked onto a painting course in Tuscany, 1 week starting 18th May. We want to use this as a focus for a European trip of about 6 weeks . We don't want to book anything EXCEPT for that one week, when she will want proper facilities and/or a hook-up.

Nearest town is Fivizzano (post code 54013 if that's any use). Can anyone recommend any sites within a few miles?

And after the course, when we get back I'll get her started on the lounge and dining rooms :D

I dont know much about campsites in Tuscany except to say that we saw plenty on our recent tour of Italy but I do know that there are many good Aires around Tuscany and Italy in general (Sostas) and that is where we stayed, all for free,so you won,t have any problems finding night stops ,

I think you're going to struggle somewhat with this. There is supposed to be a site called Albonio at Comezzano, just down the valley on the SS63, but although it comes up on a couple of Italian site directories, I can't locate it on Google Earth/Streets. Possibly closed.

The nearest that seems actually to exist, is about 8km distant as the crow flies, at Casone Carpinelli, off the SR445, but nearly 30km by road and it looks fairly basic and very rural. GPS N44.20680 E10.23520.

Larger, better equipped, sites nearer shops etc are all at Sarzana, some 40km distant. There are slightly shorter routes to Sarzana from Fivizzano, but all involve minor roads, and you're well into the Tuscan hills - not natural motorhome territory! Can you park your van on the premises where the class is to be held?

Thanks Vindiboy and Brian. I found the Alboino site but with no info so yes, possibly closed. I think our options are (a) she books on to the residential course and I go somewhere else or (b) we book into a nearby hotel/b&b/self catering apartment. But it's still early in the season so we might just go and take a chance on getting somewhere to stay.

Thanks again.

.....it is still there, but whether open in season or not is not obvious.

(though its name is Alboino, not Albonio, and a Google search pulls up plenty of links (though none with any great detail)

The following Google Streetview link shows it (confirmed with a bit of judicious zooming).

(This appears to be October, so probably no surprise it is closed).

Well done that man! Spelling does make a difference, doesn't it! :-)

I searched up and down that road in Google earth, and Streets, but stopped before the filling stations because the original, Archie's, location was north of Fivizzano, so I thought it couldn't be that far south.

However, Camping Internazionale Alboino, GPS N44.20648 E10.08168.

Has a pool, I notice, so maybe it looks better when it's open! Camping Internazionale, as well! There's posh! :-D

We toured Tuscany/Marche a few years ago during May and had no problems finding places to stop, although we did have smaller van than now. However when a friend joined us for the travel/tour bit, but stayed in rooms/hotels (none previously booked) we asked at reception where we could park and they either pointed us to nearby 'local' parking or their own parking areas - so how about contacting the people running the course and asking them if they can suggest anything?

We had great fun.

Mrs P has now booked into the residential aspect of the course - makes sense, a large part of these things is the socialising - leaving me free to explore further afield for the week. Can't wait, should be great.

Cheers all :->
