Anyone looking for a NEW small car under £6k?

If anyone is in the market for a nice little car, then have a look at the Suzuki Alto SZ - it's being discounted at the moment from £7,199 - now only £5,999 for the base version, and the better equipped ones are also discounted.

My Step Dad's wife (who does all the driving) has been saying for ages that she wanted to changer their Y reg Rover 25 for something else but never got round to really having a good look for one so we took them on a tootle round on Wednesday looking at used cars for £5k-£6k and she also had a look at the new Altos too. When it came to the fact that she could afford a 2-3 year old used car with a highish mileage, or a brand new one with no worries for 3 years (and £0 road tax forever!) and she actually really enjoyed driving it, it was a no brainer so she signed up for it there and then!

They're both well chuffed and as the dealer had a couple of unregistered ones in the compound already she was able to collect it today. We've lent her the money so she can start enjoying it straight away (she'll give it back to us shortly as she's drawing out her Premium Bond money so will have to wait for it to be paid out to her).

It is a fantastic little car, very nippy and handles beautifully. It is also very, very comfy and easily fitted 4 of us in plus they'll still be able to get in all the camping kit for when they go away.

Well, we went to pick the car up this morning, going through everything and then we thought it was good to go ... then the lad asked us for the insurance cover note! Er, the insurers were supposed to be emailing it direct to them yesterday ... he checked ... nope, they hadn't got it!

We rang the insurance company (LV) to be told that they had had a failed email delivery response and had sent a 'text' to tell step MIL about it ... to her HOME land-line phone!!! I pointed out that it would have been more sensible to ring as it was rather important especially since they knew she was collecting her new car today at 10.30 am with the insurance on her old one stopping at 11.00 am as it then transferred over to the new car. The girl didn't have an answer for this but said she could send it again so I double checked the email address they'd sent it to and they had got it wrong, despite them repeating it back to MIL yesterday to check it was correct, they added the word 'group' to the end of it (picked from a list possibly?) so it was wrong.

To make matters worse, even though the girl at LV said she'd send it again straight away, it could take up to 3 hours to get to the dealer as it had to go through a central server ... although they could fax it for a fee ... but that could also take up to 3 hours too as it had to go via the same bl**dy server!

So we were 'stuck' - we couldn't go home in the old car as the insurance had now 'expired', or drive it somewhere else! We decided to have a trot into town (fortunately only 10 mins walk away from car dealer) and hope it came through quicker. After about 45 mins we got a call from the dealer to say it had come through so by the time we got back they'd taxed the car and we were finally able to 'escape'!

The ride home was very nice and MIL has really taken to it like a duck to water ... somehow I think she might be doing a bit more mileage in this than her old Rover ... there'll be no stopping her now!!! This is the first new car she'll have ever bought ... at 82!!! :D

And serious credibility problems. My neighbours would disown us if we parked something like that outside our house. We do have standards to maintain you know. :D

I take back what I previously posted Mel, it don't look half bad at that price. A little cracker. The only downside is that it's a Suzuki. :D

Not small and not cheap.......however, I saw an ad for the latest Skoda Octavia today and was go smacked by the published fuel figures. Yes, I know these are always optimistic but one figure that stood out was in the range published for extra urban.....again I know these are the best figures for a car but.......

Skoda (and presumably other VAG cars) have attained the metric equivalent of the fuel miser's 'Holy Grail' of a 3 litre car.

This is not the engine size, of course (we are talking small diesel here) but a metric measurement of fuel consumption.....litres per 100 km.

So this car (and very, very, very few others) can travel 100km on just 3 litres of fuel. This translates to approx 93mpg which is pretty damn good.

Remember, this is a roomy five seat family car with a huge boot, and no credibility issue......it's a Skoda! ;-)

Mel, please check that the insurance details are on the MIDS data base (motorists insurance data base) as LV have messed up so many times. This is a Diy service, you just go to MIDS on your PC then type in the registration number and it tells you Yes or No and the actual model of vehicle registered.

The reason is that the Police use this data base when they do a check for insurance. Some people who pay for insurance then cancell keep their 12 month insurance certificate to show that they are insured when in fact they are not. The Police have got wise to this and use the MIDS data base. There have been cases where the person IS insured but not recorded on the data base and the insurance offices are closed (say stopped late at night), the Police have then confiscated the vehicle and you have to pay to get it back. I believe this has happened to at least one motorhome.

Better safe than sorry

Regards Mike

Hi Mike, I've done that and yes it's showing as insured. :-D

If anyone else wants to check their own vehicle(s) this is the site:

I love your optimism Mel (bib)! :D

Well ... it's £0 now so even if it does get increased in the future it won't be by any more than any other car and better than the £160ish she was paying! :-D

You mean its RFL Free ;-)..................just like the Rover B-)...............

But in 10 years time what will the Suki be worth?..........

Assuming it hasn't already been scrapped 5 years earlier because it was uneconomic to repair *-)........

Where as the Rover if looked after will probably be worth 6k :-D........

Not to mention you could become....Spit........ a tugger with the Rover 8-).......

Ah but Dave, not everyone wants the 'idiosycracy' of an old car like you to contend with! MIL has enough just keeping FIL on the right track, she doesn't need another 'old banger' to have to deal with too! :D As she's 82 and FIL is 76 I don't think they'll be too worried about the value of the car in 10 years time either as I can't see she'll still be driving by then!

FIL on left, MIL in middle, my Mum on right.

Just been offered £6,000 for my 2006 Jaguar xj, all aluminium saloon, full leather, sat-nav, computer controlled air suspension, average mileage and full service history!

As it's a diesel it is averaging a real 38mpg and will do 145 mph, not at the same time.

Never missed a beat, and guess what, I'm keeping it!
