sometimes in England when you use an automated  fuel pump a shadow payment is taken, it works like this, when the pump says checking your card it is actually doing a minimal  payment to ensure your card is good, this will rarely show on your statements as  they are usually voided after you complete your buy and you are never charged for the shadow, I have used  automated pumps all over Europe for fuel and have never had a problem anywhere.

Hi All

Re shadow payment - we use a Caxton pre-paid card to get better exchange rates (very successful as well). Occasionally, unmanned pumps will take a shadow payment which is a payment they take in additon to the normal payment out of your account and which is returned within 16 days; however, sometimes we get it back quicker. On a normal account credit/debit card account, it wouldn't matter, but I don't like leaving spare euros on my Caxton card so on a shorter holiday (only 4 weeks) I avoid using unmanned pumps. Hope this explains all.

We have been touring France for yeas and always pay with a credit card and more often than not use the unmanned pump as access out of the service station is so much easier. Sometimes we have had to reverse in so that the filler point on our Fiat is adjacent to pump dispenser, so the unmanned one works well. We have never had any problems with our credit cards - is this unique to these pre-paid cards ?

On the point of filling up, we saw a guy (Brit) in France whose filler point was on the wrong side of his motorhome actually take the diesel hose through the cab, via the passenger seat and then fill up. Hope it didn't drip or have a 'premature evacuation' of fuel.

Hi,

Sorry about change of tack, where is this air ? As we are going down next month and normally overnight at the campsite there.

The Aire is near the town centre ( the market place) only about 150 yards in fact down the road out of town towards the petrol station. It has a modern small toilet but it was not open on Sunday night Monday morning but was open in early December. Great walled town that has a nice walk along the tops of the walls with good views.

Same guy working the till at the petrol station in both December & January very pleasant man. At the car sales a MH was up for sale.

Used the campsite at Montreuil but would now only go on the aire, much better value LOL

The site costs are for 2 persons, 1dog, with leccy 19.50E/night which is not good value for a site with a posh name and nothing much else.

It happens with credit cards but you never see it. Except. If you were say £50 pound under credit limit and wanted £30 of fuel your card would be refused as they would try and take around £120 out because it would take you over your credit limit.

With prepayment cards the excess money deducted from the card is returned within 2 days. We use Caxton Card and had very few problems with it. I put the wrong pin number in 3 times once. It then started not asking for a pin number in shops which was a little worrying. It went back to normal the next time I used an ATM with the correct number.
