That's what we paid in June last year when we were under the impression that the tolls were half price due to road works and temporary speed restrictions and were due to be increased or doubled 'shortly' or early in 2014?

It depends whether you are going to Northern or Southern Spain which alternative routes to take but heading South via the Somport Tunnel - which although free could be shut in winter snow - is some 20km shorter but they all take at least an hour, some nearer two hours, longer to cover the 500 or so km from Bordeaux to Zaragosa.

You could try using Google Maps route finder to see all the alternatives but as far as I know I don't think anyone on here has yet determined a more cost and time effective route than the A63 in the hunt for the elusive best effective free alternative!

One alternative is to leave the A63 just before the toll starts for Mont-de-Marsan, Pau, Somport Tunnel, Huesca, Zaragosa , and that will save you around 23 euros each way in tolls and diesel if paying the toll is too much - which it may well become for many of us if/when it doubles?

Don't yet know what all the heavies, and there are a heck of a lot of 'em will choose to do?
