Green Spin - The Guardian at its best!

This made me laugh.

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/feb/04/heat-related-deaths-climate-change

The headline is :-

..................................

Heat-related deaths will rise 257% by 2050 because of climate change

Number of heat-related deaths projected to increase in UK as temperature rise, with elderly people most at risk

.................................

And the first paras hypes it up still further :-

"Deaths as a result of hot weather are to soar over the next four decades as a result of climate change, researchers have predicted.

The number of annual deaths in the UK that occur as a result of the heat will rise by 257% by 2050, they said. Elderly people are most at risk, according to the new study."

8-)

Then, the article does bring in the overall results of the study - and the final para's state:-

"David Spiegelhalter, professor of the public understanding of risk at the University of Cambridge, said: "It seems clear from this analysis that the reduction in cold-related deaths per 100,000 people in each age group easily outweighs the projected increase in the heat-related death rate."

"So, were the population make-up to stay the same into the 2080s, temperature-related deaths would actually fall. "Therefore it would be more accurate to say that increased number of future temperature-related deaths was wholly driven by projected population growth and ageing." "

(lol)

So the correct headline should surely be:-

"TEMPERATURE RELATED DEATHS TO FALL!"

But this would not make for a good Climate Change scare story for all the Guardianistas out there.

No wonder the comments virtually rip the story to pieces and also no wonder the circulation of this paper is falling like a stone.

:D One who made the 2nd comment was an Ian Hassall, he said:

So if there's a +1C rise in temperature, death rate increases by 2%, and if there's a -1C fall in temperature, death rate increase by 2%. This would suggest that UK citizens live in a halcion environment, perfect conditions for life.

Does that sound like b*****ks to anyone else?

Have you load of disbelieving, malcontents :-D learned nothing from this forum?

The researchers who came up with this highly edjumicated projection come from Public Health England (PHE) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and have published in the Journal of Epidemiology ans Community Health, which according to their website is a truly international journal that encompasses all aspects of epidemiology and public health. It publishes original research, opinions and materials concerned with the study and improvement of communities worldwide.

So all you naysayers (me included) should bow down (am on bended knee offering unreserved adoration right now) to learned research carried out by your betters.........hehe
