Going to Spain in January/February

We have a dog, and found when we went to the North west of Spain and that dogs were not generally well received. Can anyone give advice on dog friendly locations in winter and whether dogs can be exercised on sections of the beaches at that time of year? Also, advice on good sites and what weather and temperatures to expect would be gratefully received!!

Thanks

welcome to the forum...Using your email address not the cleverest thing to do for a user name, you may well be spammed, see if you can change it :-D

for decent weather you need to get to Med..at least to Alicante region. some sites are happy enough with well controlled dogs.

Welcome to the forum, we are in costa del sol at present, today the sun is out there is only a slight breeze, its great. The site allows dogs and many take their owners to the bar, after a hard walk on the beach. Site Camping Cabapino.

Cheers Iain

What is the site like at Cabapino, now? we stayed there a few years ago and thought it was tatty, has it improved? Coming over in April, and hopefully heading down that far this year. Only got as far as Calpe last two years , as we like it there, but would like to get further this year.

Have you tried El Roccio? Love that site, but they last time we went had a lot more weekenders, parked up. Still worth a visit though

Shopping is difficult at Cabopino and the site was tatty when I went there last year. The place is dead and you have to go into Marbella or Fuengerola for a change of scenery. The local beach is excellent but not his time of the year.

We spent 7 weeks at Cabopino over Christmas with our 2 Labradors. Strictly speaking dogs are not allowed on the beach, and apparently a dog warden does exist, but I have not heard of any problems. Your biggest problem will be the cats - which are protected - and the dogs eating cat poo.

Apart from ACSI sites which specifically state that no dogs are allowed, we have not had any problems.

Incidentally although I agree that the weather will generally be better further south, today in Valencia (Camping Coll Vert), it was 29C! Mind you it was 11C on Monday and Tuesday.

We are in benidorm on the " el raco" site and there are plenty of dogs here.lovely site and of course, it would be difficult to find another destination as lively as here. The weather seems to be better here than further south as well, much less rain. Enjoy!

Slightly off topic, but how busy is El Raco? Hope to go to La Torreta shortly so just trying to get an idea of how busy good old Beni is

A few answers, there has been investment at Cabapino since last year, in new electric boxes, and water stand pipes. We dont find it tatty , the grounds men are continually working, as well as the lovely cleaner girls. As far as shoping, Lidl is 20mins walk, but there is a bakery van, every day also small on site shop sells milk bacon etc. The port with a very good choice of bars and restaurant 5 mins walk. Right next door is Da Bruno Italian excellent IMO. The site bar, open untill 11.45.

But everyones different thank goodness! :-D

we are currently on a clockwise tour of Spain and Portugal, Near Tavira at the monment. We have been to many sites and beaches and had no problem with our well behaved dog(retriever). Many beaches do say no dogs but they seem to be tolerated during the winter months. enjoy your trip.

We are on La Torreta now and although it is busy there are one or two leaving each day now, so you should be allright. We are on the Benidorm Palace side at the bottom which is the busiest, but there are a few reasonable places on the other side and you can move pitches when one comes free. We are leaving a week tomorrow but our pitch is not good for larger vans.

Thanks very much for info James. Will probably be middle of March when we get there so with what you say should be ok. Our plan is to pick up MH from Alicante airport and go south a bit but from looking at other forum postings it looks like sites are pretty full at moment. Brother who lives in Spain says we can park up beside others in a car park near him so if worst comes to worst will wild camp.

Thanks again

Sue - like you I wasn't too impressed by the site that Ian mentioned. We decided to move onto Portugal thinking that there was nothing that would interest us around the Gibralter / Cadiz area . However we came across a lovely site just past Tarifa - which we found out was the kite surfing capital of Spain. The site is perched high off the roads offering great views from the spacious pitches .Beach is directly across the road and the sands stretch for a good 3 miles . Great beach for walking and for the dog.

Portugal tends to be a bit wet and windy in the winter ;-).................Camping Kiko just South of Valencia is right on the beach and everyone walks their dogs on the beach B-)

I am at Camping Torre del Mar on the Costa del Sol every winter and here there are no problems

with dogs. There is a large dog walking area behind the site and dogs are allowed on the beach, albeit on a lead.

For a Spanish flavour,Torre del Mar is worth visiting.

The temprature in the last few days has been over 20C. The only drawback are the high winds we get at some point most days
