Two Bicycle Carrier For Motorhome/Trailer Combo.

It's obvious from all the postings that motorhomes are emerging from hibernation and thankyou for all the help (ongoing or otherwise) so far.

I would like to delve into the font of knowledge gleaned from experience and pose the following:-

Autotrail Delaware with BJ trailer and Toyota iQ with no facility for carrying two bicycles. I don't want to

attach a cycle carrier on the mhome above the spare wheel and the towball is already occupied so any

suggestions please?

If it was possible to mount two bicycles between the motorhome and the trailer would it impinge on the turning arc between the two?

You might get away with a flange-mounted cycle carrier, i.e. one which fits between the towbar and towball, leaving the latter clear for towing.

Various designs are available, as an example look at the Witter site.

In the dim and distant past, I used one of these to overcome similar issues, you would have to be careful of a number of things, however:

- If the towbar is type-approved, does the TA include the use of flange-mounted accessories

- Total "noseweight" on the towball (including bikes and trailer)

- Yes, the trailer clearance can be affected - just how much depends on the geometry.

Another possible alternative, depending on the geometry of the trailer drawbar, would be the use of a Fiamma caravan bike rack (designed to fit on an A-Framed drawbar) affixed to the trailer.

Clearance again would have to be checked.

If folding bikes are any use to you, would 2 of them fit inside the IQ?

Or even inside the van?

Hi Chris

Really don't want to carry them inside the van but have considered folding bikes inside the IQ . One folding bike fills the boot with seats fully forward but not sure if any room left for 2 nd bike!

Bike rack on an IQ, Move it to the M/home when needed ?

This might make interesting reading if you have not seen it already.

Hi Tony

Very interesting: what's the state of play now and do you have any costings please?

We changed our minds about towing the IQ, and spent the trailer money on a couple of electric (Freego) bikes.

Both of us had problems with lifting, so gave up the idea of maneuvering a trailer around a site in favour of car hire through the Caravan Club or local campsite.

We sold the IQ after 3 years and bought a convertible. In many ways, sad to see the IQ go, but pleased as the new car is so much more comfortable on longer runs.

The Thule rack (for electric Bikes) was about £300. Maybe overpriced but does what it says on the large box it came in. Fitted onto the towball with no problems, needed a little adjustment to ensure the handle bars did not mark the back of the m/home/ A Bike cover from Taylormade (Silver-screen sellers) and job done.

The rack included a ramp for wheeling up - onto the rack and an arm with a lockable clip and wheel ties hold the bikes on. Rack will take up to 60kg. We take the batteries out when traveling.

Have I got this right? 27 hours ago, you were asking about a bike carrier to use in conjunction with a MH and a trailer mounted Toyota IQ.

Now, the IQ and the trailer have gone, replaced by a convertible you won't be towing, 2 electric bikes, and a towball mounted bike carrier.

That is grasping the nettle, big style. I'm well impressed. (!) :-D
