2005 SWIFT KONTIKI 610 - WHEELS

Recommended Posts

I have a 2005 Swift Kontiki 610 Motorhome - based on the x244 Fiat Ducato base vehicle. According to the handbook the wheel size is 6J X 15"- H2. - that is all it says.

I have been offered new wheels for my winter tyres - these are from a 2013 Autotrail - again on a 2013 Fiat Ducato base vehicle BUT with wheel spec 6J x 15" ET68 – PCD 5 x 118mm – centering hole 71.1 mm – bolt M14 x 1.5 . Would these wheels be suitable for my 2005 vehicle?

This question was asked (inconclusively) on the Fiat forum in 2010

http://www.fiatforum.com/ducato/244893-ducato-wheels.html

There are several on-line suppliers of wheels suitable for Ducatos.

tyremen.co.uk offers 15" steel wheels and although the technical description provided for pre-2007 and 2007-onwards wheels is the same

Size: 6J X 15

PCD: 5 X 118

Offset: ET 68

Centre bore: 71.1

Rim diameter: 15 inches

the tyremen adverts specify that one type of 15" steel wheel is suitable only for 1998-2006 Ducatos and, for 2007-onwards Ducatos, a different 15" steel wheel is required. Similarly, if one wanted to obtain alloy wheels from tyremen that would be suitable for Ducatos, wheels suitable for X244 models would differ from wheels suitable for X250s.

The matter was also raised on the MotorHomeFacts forum in 2011

http://www.motorhomefacts.com/ftoptitle-114426-2011-ducato-x250-spare-wheelspare-wheel-carrier.html

when it was advised (authoritatively) that "The X250 wheel is different from the previous model and is not interchangeable".

Nick Fisher (euroserv) might be able to say with certainty whether or not 15" X244 and X250 steel wheels are 100% interchangeable, but there seem to be indications that they should not be interchanged even if they can be.

Even if the offset, PCD and centering-hole are the same, the wheels look the same, and X250 wheels will fit on X244 hubs (or vice versa), that's no guarantee that there isn't some subtle, important difference between them.

I suggest you ask the tyremen people about this as, if they are advertising different wheels for X244s and X250s, it's reasonable to expect them to be able to say what the differences are.

Hello Derek. Phoned up Fiat UK - they couldn't help me. Have contacted Tyremen as you suggested and I await their reply. However what I have found out that the database that the outlets use to find out the vehicle wheel spec -it is unreliable. Apparently with the X244 there are 2 different variations dependent on the chassis fitted - different bolt size etc I am taking my spare wheel down to the local wheel specialist outlet who claim they will be able to tell me immediately what will fit and what wont .

Derek- found the answer( I think). I went in to see our local alloy wheel specialist and he asked me 1 basic question - what is the PCD . Apparently for the Fiat Ducato ( 1994- 2014) there are only 2 possible options ie PCD = 118MM OR 130 MM. My Fiat 15 base vehicle = 118mm whereas the bigger 18 Maxi =130mm.. I have now checked whether a 2013 Fiat Ducato wheel fits mine and it does - glad to say.

I believe that the only difference between pre and post 2006 wheels is the position of the valve hole - seriously.

Pre-2006 the valve hole was aligned with a wheel stud.

Post-2006 the valve hole bisects two wheels studs.

Circumstantial evidence (pictures on ebay..) suggess that these 2 variants do in fact exist.

Both types fit both pre and post 2006 vehicles with the caveat that some wheel covers/trims locate the wheels studs and valve and are not interchangable between the 2 types.

It sounds bizarre but I believe that that is how it is.

Out of curiosity I've now spoken to a "Tyremen" representative about old/new Ducato steel wheel compatibility.

I was told that, besides the valve-hole position-in-the-rim difference, there's a critical difference in the position (and/or dimensions) of the 'studs' that locate the wheel on the hub. The steel wheels that tyremen markets are not Fiat original-equipment parts but copies, and I was told that the stud-hole positions/dimensions of these wheels allow them to fit pre-2006 and 2006-onwards Ducatos.

If this information is correct, although it may be possible to successfully fit Fiat OE steel wheels for 2006-onwards Ducatos to pre-2006 Ducato hubs, vice versa may not be practicable.
