Waste water drainage

I have a Bessacar 435 2012. The levels show the grey water tank to be full but I'm sure it isn't. The water only comes out from the outlet in a trickle - I tried flushing out the grey water pipes with an appropriate solution and then water, but still only a trickle. It is parked on a slope nose up - the pipe from the tank to the outlet looks difficult to remove. Could it be a problem with the sensor ? I don't often play the 'helpless female' but apart from taking it to where I have it serviced, I'm not sure what else I can do. Any suggestions please ?

Hi Gfletch

Welcome to the madhouse (as some people call it). You're not a helpless female, just taking wise precautions.

I'd first try closing the outlet valve and then fill the sink four or five times with a hosepipe, then open the valve and see if the water comes out with this little bit of header pressure. I don't think it would be worthwhile taking your motorhome to your service engineer unless he specialises in motorhomes. No doubt an expert will come along and give you some further advice.

Happy flushing. :-S

Thanks for that Alan - I'll give it a try and let you know. If all else fails I will take it to the service garage - they deal only with MH's and seem very good. All these fancy computerised systems are useful until they go wrong. I guess that if the tank really had been full, the waste water would eventually have come back through the pipes. Thanks again. Gillian :-)

Gillian if your tank is anything like ours it should hold between 80-100 ltrs so your not going to see the overflow work unless the grey tank is full (which I wouldn't recommend)

If your van is a Swift go onto the Swift talk forum and ask your question there. These indicators aren't reliable ! they can get stuck and give false readings! a 2012 will still be under warranty so contact the maker for advise.

If your tank is anything the one on my Swift, there is row of about 6 small holes on the top front edge. If the tank is full the waste will flow out these holes.

If the holes are blocked (as mine was) the waste will not drain properly when the main drain tap is opened as ther will be an airlock.

Although my suspicion is the gauge sensors are at fault and need the cleaning treatment as previously described.

I notice that, on Page 48 of the 2014 Swift handbook, there is advice about the water-level sensor and cleaning it, and it's reasonably likely that the same system will have been used on a 2012 Bessacarr.

My own experience of probe-type sensors is that, if the probes are dirty, the gauge will tend to under-read rather than over-read.

My suspicions would fall on the sensor and agree that if you still have warranty let the dealer sort it for you

I don't know which type you have on your van but as I understand it there are two types of sensor, one indicates % full and the other works in quarters. The one I have reads in quarters and often showed full when empty. The dealer removed and cleaned it but it still remained erratic so a Swift supplied modification kit was fitted that consisted of a length of stainless steel plate connected to the common wire. It did improve the situation but it's never been very reliable.

Hi Gillian - For the Control Panel also worth a check is the wiring connections (on a side of the tank) usually 3 or 4 which connect to the internal sensors at their differing levels. They can become clogged with road dirt or wet with spray or work loose. Disconnecting them, cleaning & reconnecting can sometimes solve the problem.

For trickle waste flow, the outlet pipe or valve may be blocked by an accumulation of debris &/or grease. On our previous Bessacarr, the valve was a straight bore ball valve, so it is possible to open the valve & push a length of dowel /rod through, but be careful & stand well to the side because if it is blocked it may suddenly clear & waste water gush out.

could it be the drain pipe or just at its joint with the tank itself which is blocked?

As has been mentioned earlier most of these sensors fail on the empty side.

In my experience, it's generally where the waste pipe s connected to the outlet valve.
