Hello On our local news on the TV yesterday we saw horrific details of how quickly a motorhome can go up in flames. Picture: Corin Messer. A FIREBALL which ripped through a camper van, killing its occupant, is thought to have started when candles set furniture alight. The fire, which is believed to have been an accident, started suddenly and emergency services received a call just before 8am on Thursday from residents in Whitecliff Road, Poole, overlooking a public car park. A 57-year-old man was thought to have been inside the van with a female friend when the fire broke out. The woman is said to have escaped, but despite the fire crews' efforts to get the victim, it was too late to save him. continued... David Brind, who runs a catering business in the car park, witnessed the fire. "I got here at about 7.15am and a little while later the fire was going," he said. "There was a driving instructor here who tried to pull him out but couldn't get to him because of the flames." The fire service's area commander Steve Shuck, said: "Fire crews called to the scene carried out an aggressive fire attack to gain rapid entrance. "Unfortunately, the body of a man was found inside and he had died on the scene." A joint investigation is being carried out by Dorset Fire and Rescue and the police, although they do not suspect suspicious circumstances. Dorset Fire and Rescue issued a statement reminding the owners of camper vans and motorised homes to take safety precautions. "It's important that all lessons from this incident are learnt," the statement said. Police have not yet named the man.
