When you are away from home

Leaving soon on first extended MH jaunt. Never been away for more than 2 weeks before.

Any tips on what we should do about leaving house empty?

E.g. arranging to have grass cut, having mail held, etc.

Probably not lights on a timer, we suffer from power cuts which throw the timer off!

Thanks in advance.

We have a relative visit frequently for post etc but also have a monitored alarm and a camera that is linked to the house wifi and takes photos of anyone entering the house and emails/texts the pictures to us. Just gives us peace of mind

We have a Yale alarm ,its not monitored, but makes a hell of a noise ,one box at front dummy at rear.We get the young lad next door to sort mail .Also let neighbors park there car on our drive, just to make it look like a presence .Neighbors have a key to house and Alarm code ,also my contact details and daughters who live local, costs couple of bottles of wine but worth it.As every one has said good relations with neighbors is the key .We watch there house they return the favour.

We try to avoid loading up the MH at home and prefer the hassle of carting bits and pieces to the place where it is stored. We live on a main road with a busy footpath and I always feel that the whole world will notice loading up and guess we will be away for a while. For this reason we also prefer to store the van away from home - as an interested amateur MHer I know where all the local MHs are stored on driveways and often think 'they must be away' if the usual parking space is empty.

We also leave our cars on the drive and the radio on in the house as well as a neighbour picking up the post and feeding the cat!

Just wondered if your extended trip is in the the UK or abroad - the advice would be very different depending on your answer.

Abroad Cattwg - thanks to all for responses so far.

Re. keeping MH on drive or away, we know that absence of the MH does rather advertise that we are away. However, we found when we kept a caravan in storage, the spontaneity of just going when we felt like it was missing. This is more so with a MH, which we also use for days out.

Re the grass, we used "Green Thumbs Slow Mow" last time we were away in the growing season for a month. So rather than a foot high wilderness that took 6 hours to cut *-)......... the grass was just a little longer than usual, it was quite pricey at 100 quid for our lawn which is a fare size, although I suspect it would of cost about the same to have someone come into cut it once a week............

PS don't forget to turn the water off ;-)

Hi candapac,

Not strictly answering your question but as it's your first longish trip abroad have you considered things like: copies of your passports, copies of all the numbers needed should you lose the originals and need to contact your insurers etc., copies of all vehicle documentation and copies of your 'E111'?

The foregoing are all good practices most of which we do we also when going away for an extended period we turn the water and gas off and unplug any electrical equipment that does not need to be left switched on. We have electronic timers on the lights that maintain the settings and time for weeks without power, leaving lights on is a must.

If you do have regular power cuts which last a long time I would try and leave the freezer empty just in case they last over the 24 hours that they recon will be ok without power.

If you go away for more than 31 days check you are covered on all your insurances motorhome, travel, home and breakdown.

Stock up with any prescribed medication long before you plan to leave home. Copy all your neccesary documentation twice, leave a set hidden at home and take one with you as well as the originals.

Visit the CC site, they have advice pages on what you need when going abroard. I think they viewable by none members.

We scan the important documents and as well as paper copies, we upload the scans (as pdf's) to dropbox, which is a free file storage facility, like iCloud or googledrive.....there are loads of free storage sites available now. Generally you get a few GB free in the hope that you will buy additional storage.

So if we lost all the documents....methodical thief or fire....(must stop using that chip pan whilst driving)....then we could download copies from the internet.

Royal mail have a system called Keepsafe where they reserve all your post and keep it til your return. Maximum 66 days. Neighbours are a better option if you are not in the back of beyond.
