Get a kindle, much better than lugging heaps of books. The free books are free for a reason, mostly rubbish, pay for better stuff. I have my newspaper downloaded daily for £9.99/month, other papers again mostly tat are cheaper. I can get it on my paper white 3G anywhere in the world, while lying in bed, really good for the bone idle amongst us. Battery life is fantastic if you free camp.

The best thing while abroad is not having to swap books, for ones that look and smell like the dog has peed on them!

Not true,

Amazon Top 100 Free is updated at least weekly you will find books in the top 100 that you have to pay for are often listed on the top free and visa versa, also nearly all the classics are available free from various sites.

Don't get a kindle, get a Nook much better price and a glowlight too.

I pad/Galaxy Tab are no use in bright sunlight and are power hungry, I charge my Nook around once a fortnight. Use Calibre, a free e-book library organiser on your PC to change formats of books to play on various devices.

The book I'm reading now is about Maot Tsi-tung it has 870 pages. It will take me 2-3 weeks to read.

I doubt that a kindle would cater for that type of book. I only read biographical books.

I'm sure that we're all very impressed by how intellectual you are. It's a pity that you didn't use that giant brain to do two minutes' research. You might have found this list of Kindle books.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Mao

You may also note how much cheaper the Kindle versions are. You can get hundreds of such books on a Kindle at the same time, whereas the locker in your motorhome will probably take about twelve!

Ps And on a Kindle you can increase the font size to make reading so much easier as your eyesight deteriorates with age, fortunately not a problem for me yet.

( You can always take one or two paperbacks as well - which can often be swapped on campsites )

;-)

Which is why I wont be replacing our Kindle Malc ;-)................As I found being limited to whats on offer in the swap section actual broadens my reading habits............and they're free whereas I actually started buying books with the KIndle 8-)................

I used a Kindle when I was working away from home during the week. I also took it with me in the van. Then I trod on it and realised Kindles are not that strong. Also used an i-pad for reading for a while but found holding the thing and the bright screen became tiresome. However, i-pads - and presumably other tablets - are good for e-magazines and the like.

Best bit about my original Kindle was that I could hold it in one hand and hold a cup of tea in the other. Can't do that so easily now Kindle have moved away from a keyboard to screen based.

My son reads technical journals and chose a different e-reader. Kindles are not so good with pictures, maps and diagrams. Be sure what sort of material you want to read and choose accordingly.

There are numerous free or cheap books on Kindle. The difficulty is finding good ones from the vast numbers and the sometimes awful self published reads. I've downloaded just over 200 books on to my Kindle of which about a dozen were binned very quickly after reading. There are probably only thirty or so that I've read twice. I find too many cheap Kindle books have poor grammar, show a lack of editing, and poor characterisation. You also have to watch when it says 'Kindle edition' because it may mean the original text has been condensed.

You won't get many blockbusters at bargain prices on a Kindle. Classics are usually free because the copyright has expired.

A Kindle will not save you money because as you've proved, books can be bought cheaply. A Kindle will save you carrying lots of books around and you'll not be without a book once you build up a small library. I found myself one Wednesday night away from home having read all the paper books I carried. Not nice.

Kindles also allow you to set the size of the screen font which can be useful even if you do not have restricted vision. Smaller fonts allow me to skim read. Other aids includes various bookmarks and a dictionary.

Now I've retired, I find my Kindle fine for the motorhome - as does my wife with hers - but at home I go to the local library for paper books.

It means that you are then not tied to a single supplier for your books.

Kindle's domination of the market may seem like a good thing, but!

That doesn't really make much sense. Kindle gives you the easiest download experience for millions of books so for most people will be the simplest choice. Not everyone is a computer expert.

However, you are not tied to Amazon as the application that you mention (Calibre) will convert any other e-book formats to Kindle.

The truth is though that the average Kindle reader will have enough books to last him several lifetimes, some chargeable and many free.

If anyone wishes to expand their reading to specialist subjects that may only be available in other formats then they can convert them to Kindle format.

Kindle gives the best of both worlds.

Having spent a large number of years laying under grotty cars repairing damaged chassis, I'm entitled to read what I like. I look for people and subjects I know little about. However I wasn't aware that a Kindle catered for books like Mao.

I borrow books from our mobile library and the cost is nil, I also prefer to handle a book.

PS ... And tell me why is it you are always so grumpy ?

Grumpy? Perhaps it's people such as you who come on here slagging off a product of which you clearly know nothing and once more, trying to impress, on this occasion by telling us all that you only read biographies? Well, bully for you! And suggesting that a bio of Mao isn't available on Kindle without even checking? Oh dear.

And when have I or anyone else ever suggested that you are not entitled to read whatever you like?

Open your mind and you may well find that a Kindle will give you far greater choice and you'll be able to source books that you'd never come across otherwise.

Finally, what has your previous job got do do with what you're entitled to read? I was never aware that a person's occupation precluded him from certain literary choices?

Oh dear what a curious person. Have you nowt else to do?

It were your suggestion that I was an intellectual, I was re-enforcing that I'm not by explaining that my early days were rather the opposite

Presumably now that some posters have been banned you're taking a swipe at someone else.

Tough because I ignore nutters

Kindle Keyboard

Pros battery lasts weeks.

Cons not the easiest to use at night. Software and key board rather dated, Not good on pictures or diagrams

Kindle White,

Pros light to use, easy adjustable backlight, battery lasts a fair while. Proably the best of the bunch

Kindle HD, limited Android software controlled by Amazon. OK but better tablets around with better performance If you read books with lots of picture and diagram detail its good, if normal books battery charge every couple of days. A fair number of useful apps such as weather, News Iplayer, but does not play some Flash applications without a lot of faffing about.
