Pipkim
If you have a moment to spare, please read this.... https://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/shetland-islands-council-stop-the-demolition-of-clickimin-campsite-and-reopen-the-facility and sign up! This is about the Clickimin campsite in Lerwick, Shetland.... which was a great resource for locals as well as visitors. It's been shut this year due to the plans for a new high school.....with decisions rushed through, to say the least. It's not a case of a campsite or a high school...there is room for both. The site is now closed and doesn’t look like it will be replaced by Shetland Island Council any time soon. It is a great loss to the camping fraternity in Lerwick as this was a superb base to return to whilst travelling around the Shetland Isles. Another reason for attempting to trigger the local Council to reconsider....is that the helipad for emergencies is adjacent to the campsite....and it's only recently been acknowledged that this couldn't remain IF the school is built where the campsite is located...so they are now (at the 11th hour) trying to find a work around for the helipad...which of course didn't feature in the initial decision making/financial arguments. sambukashot
Why the petition now when this was common knowledge back in 2012? http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2012/12/13/clickimin-campsite-to-be-sold-off-to-make-way-for-new-anderson-high/
Pipkim
I think everyone thought that it was a "done deal" when it was first announced, but as there seems to have been a delay in getting planning/construction underway, the opportunity to put some form of formal objection in place has come to the fore. The site appears to be just standing empty for the peak summer months, which is scandalous. If another site was put forward at the same time as closure, nobody would be up in arms. pepe63xnotuse
So who or what are the "Shetland recreational trust"?...are they in anyway accountable to local tax payers?.. or are they basically just a "company"/business" who owned the site/land..?.. If it's the latter and they've sold it to "the council" for use as a school, how can a petition stop it?... Either way, as Sambuka's link says that the site barely covered it's running costs, unfortunate as it may be, it's not really that surprising that they flogged it... :-S
Rayjsj
The next article in the Shetland times will be complaints about Motorhomes parking up overnight and upsetting the B&B owners. THEY CANNOT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS ! the tourists will still come whether they close the campsite or no, better to have a proper facility (that already exists !!) instead of being forced to build another one, sometime in the future. Petition signed. Another crazy short-term short sighted decision !
