Hello there

I'm not a motorhome owner but am now in the position of seriously looking for one.

I've started to go up to folks in campsites and car parks asking about their Vdubs. I'm definitely after a VW but would like some advise before I settle for one. T4 or T5? I do want a turbo diesel as I'm gonna be driving it every day to work. Somebody advised me against a T5 manufactured before 2009!

What advise can you give me folks?

Welcome to the Out&AboutLive forums.

As you've decided that the motorhome should be based on a Volkswagen, your best bet to obtain on-line advice specific to that manufacturer's products (eg. not buying a pre-2009 T5) should be via the websites that target that make of camping vehicle. For example

Perhaps you have already done this?

If a VW is your preference so be it and I would not wish to sway your choice, but have you considered alternatives such as Ford, Merc, Renault or Sevel based vans as they too have their advantages - mainly greater interior space, lower initial costs in some cases, wider availability, potentially less expensive service and parts (not Merc maybe!)?

Life can get pretty claustrophobic in a small camper especially if the weather is poor but maybe the smaller size is more of an advantage for you for everyday use?

You might want to check the position with emissions regulations. The London LEZ now makes it prohibitive to drive some vehicles into the capital and I'm not sure what the situation would be with a T4. I know that my petrol T4 avoids these problems.

Presumably the advice about avoiding a T5 manufactured before 2009 is related to the mid life updates. The T4 had a reputation for unresponsive brakes before it was updated in the mid 1990's. I don't think it would be a deal breaker though.
