PatLynn
Hi all, We have a late night Eurotunnel crossing next week and had intended staying at Cite Europe - however with all the news at the moment on the migrant problem around Calais we are wondering if anyone knows of a safe place to spend what will be left of the night before we head off on our holiday? one possibility we've heard of is Auchan Boulogne - anyone know anything about there? Any help very much appreciated Pat & Lynn
starvin marvin
My plan is to keep clear of Pas de Calais, and time my arrival to drive straight into the terminal. You can drive a long way in day, we can all do without the grief.
Billggski
The problems are those wanting to get into the UK, going the other way they are not interested. Wissant is just down the coast and quite popular.
Cattwg
Hi Pat& Lynn I've just posted this answer as a reply to another post, hope it's useful for you. An aire we use that's about 32 miles to the east of Calais is the one at Bergues. Take J16 off the A25 then turn right after about 500 yards, and go along a roughish access road. The aire is a large hardstanding area adjacent to the football pitches. It’s free parking only, services are available at Camping Verdun for €5 – take shortcut (a couple of miles or so) through the town centre towards Hondschoote. Quite a lot of the old town walls are still in tact and make for an interesting walk - leaflet from the TIC in the bell tower on the town square. Cattwg :-D . PatLynn
Thanks so much guys for the replies - should have said we are travelling from UK and heading south hoping for some late sun! Bergues sounds lovely, but in the wrong direction for us - will keep that for another time!
Madge Gentle
Auchen at Boulogne is fine to use – they also have a borne (50.733084,1.668637) Le Portel with borne (50.711522,1.575335) Boulogne opposite Fritterie off the D940 (50.742579,1.596233) Equihen Plage with borne (50.679832,1.568061) Wissant as mentioned in an earlier post but gets full early and buses leave at some god forsaken time in the morning. Small Aire between Wissant and Escalles (50.679832,1.568061) Is that enough?
PatLynn
Oh super, thanks so much...coordinates too! Very kind. I think we will head for auchan Boulogne...easier to find and park in the dark....and we will be tired after a full working day (not quite retired!) lennyhb
We normally stay at Cap Gris Nez, usually 4 or 5 vans there bread van comes round in the morning, nice cliff top walk.
Watty
1 hour down the motorway just short of Abbeville is the Aire De La Baie De Somme, excellent stop with a borne and excellent parking and is patrolled by the Police 3 or 4 times during the night. We know because last weekend we were woken up by them after HID had left a bag on display and they woke us up to point it out!!!

If the police patrol 3 & 4 times a night that tells me it's an unsafe place that I do not want to stay at. Police only patrol that often if it is a high crime area. Bojitoes
We are going via Dunkirk in a couple of weeks on a late ferry, we were thinking about spending the night at Bray Dunes but wonder if we should head a bit further away from the port- anyone got any suggestions for an aire within 20 miles drive? Thanks Bob
lennyhb
If going Dunkirk way always use Grand Fort Philppe.
w1ntersun
Aire De La Baie De Somme We have been stopping there 4 times a year for the last 10 years with no problems. If you have a wifi aerial that is also free.
StuartO
We fuelled up at Auchan Boulogne after an afternoon crossing without difficulty and the shop car park looked OK for overnighting but we drove on another 20 miles or so to the Aire at Montreuil, just off the D901, which we were using as the alternative to the peage section of the A16 to head South. It was a nice big level area of gravel and had a free toilet which even the OH was willing to use. Dead quiet until 0800 on Sunday morning when the local gathered to play boules on the adjacent pitch. We'll use it again.

BrianBW
All replies have been so far away from Calais! Why not do a search on 'Archies campsites' for closer camp sites. Wont tell you mine as it will be inundated by others.
carebear
We are thinking of staying at Cite Europe the weekend arriving early hours, have stayed there previously no problems. We are two motorhomes so not alone. Is the police station still at the entrance to the Car park ?
Cattwg
Hi Bojitoes, The information I posted earlier regarding Bergues may be useful. Bergues is about 16 miles east of Dunkerque. Cattwg :-D
hughman
The nick is still there, although not much evidence of activity from it. Still, I reckon you should be ok with 2 of you. Just make sure you check any covered racks etc before you leave. I'm very unimpressed with Eurotunnel security though - no checks at all, just verbal. carebear
Thank you Hughman, if there are any Clingons on our vans, we are going wrong direction for them, they be getting a free trip down the south (lol) so could be one or two less at Calais. ;-)
Bojitoes
Thank you for the suggestions, will be Grands Phillippe or Bergues depending on how dark it is at 7.30 which we go for. Bob

Bojitoes
Hi All We got back last friday from German trip. Stayed penultimate night at the campsite at Ieper, (Ypres). Definitely somewhat strange as site is fully automated, you cannot even get in the gate without swiping your credit card; having said that excellent value for money at 12€. Our last night we stayed at the aire behind the Tourist Office in Bray Dunes- it was OK but no facilities. There were however another 11 vans there, all non UK, so safety in numbers. On our way out we stopped at another aire in Bray Dunes, this one was at Carrefour and included a borne with electric. It also benefitted from Carrefour security patrols so we heard nothing - except the guard dog barking occasionally! Before getting to Dunkirk we had a look around Westende, just over the Belgian border and there seemed to be numerous opportunities for both campsites and overnight stops although we did not see any "official" aires marked. Thanks for all the suggestions made prior to our trip. Bob

Another vote for Baie de la Somme aire on the autoroute - we stay there regularly when travelling outward or homeward. Although coming back last month, we only just squeezed into our preferred location signposted for caravans - it's getting more popular I think. Perhaps everybody wants to overnight away from Calais now... http://www.baiedesomme.fr/fr/aire-autoroutiere-de-la-baie-de-somme Mike
