Managed to find a couple of Municipal sites open last February as we returned from Spain. Although at one the manager only worked Monday to Friday and told us via a friendly local who called them just to park outside gate and run the EHU to nearest outlet. Free stay and oodles of hot water!

Apart from the municipal sites in France all of the others are commercial enterprises, do you folk think they can be staffed and run just because the sun has put in a late appearance. It is also the case that the majority of the French, and other Europeans using sites do so only during school holidays, this is nothing new, so why the fuss.

We are currently parked up at La Ferriere aux Etangs, where the local Marie no doubt thinking outside the box has opened the now unstaffed Municipal site for use as an Aire with a new borne ( 2 euros ) all hedged pitches, but apart from one French van we are the only ones here, if the sun wasn't out I doubt anyone would be here, its economics gentleman, just work around it.

France shuts at the end of September! Wild camping is the way to go. :-D

Nonsense. While it is true if you are one of the thousands 0f Brits who never venture away from the Atlantic coast you will find a lot closed however plenty of sites open all year in most of France. The ones that are open also tend to be the best with heated toilet/shower facilities etc. Plenty open in the alps for example all year, you just need to look. If your preference is sleeping in laybys then plenty of those of course, you can even glorify the practice by calling it a daft name such as 'wilding'.

Henri, just driven down N20 past many tourist areas on way to where we are now at Narbonne, and if 10% of sites en route or signed from route, were open then would be surprised! And this is along way from Atlantic coast. All Aires open and busy, mainly French vanners, but odd Brit.

Aire here at Narbonne, not Narbonne Place, is great for visiting town and great value as the 9€/night fee includes free bus travel into city(need to show card issued on entry) and 16A hook up. In city buy museum pass for 9€ as gives entry to six excellent museums, with time to have nice lunch in the historic square.
