Wiring twin cameras

I'm intending to fit twin rear view cameras with a double DIN AV monitor unit but I have been told that I need a unit with two camera inputs. I thought that it was possible to wire the system so that the cameras switch over automatically when reverse gear is engaged. Does anyone know if this is possible. Failing this anybody able to recommend a unit with two camera inputs. I only need a basic performance from the AV side of things. A radio and CD/mp3 player would be adequate.

Why not fit a Monitor that clips to your Rear View mirror, they have twin inputs, and are switchable between views (manually, both Cameras on all the time the ignition is on) in my experience the 'Indash' screens are very hard to see, as they are at an angle and the light across the screen makes it hard to see. I replaced my single Autotrail rearview camera and Double din Monitor, with the above, and fitted a Double Din Dab+ radio cd/usb instead. Link to Camera and Monitor I used . :

Several reasons why I am not keen on a mirror system:

1. I have a forward facing camera which would have to be replaced.

2. The in-dash monitor would be bigger

3. I would still have to buy an AV system which would probably be more costly in total.

A third possibility would be a monitor mounted on top of the dash - if the monitor were mounted to the right then it would easier to flick my eyes between the monitor and the wing mirror. I've been told, however, that a 7in monitor might be too big to allow this.

I am trying to find out what is different about the mirror system that allows two cameras. Does your mirror unit have two separate camera leads?

I fed mine into my head unit that has a 6" screen, 1st attempt I fed one to the camera input & the other to one of the aux inputs, two problems doing it that way ,1) Cuts off the music when selecting the aux input, 2) A fiddle selecting between cameras on the touch screen.

I have now fitted a miniature rocker switch just above the gear lever which switches between the 2 cameras and connects to the camera input, it's now very easy to switch between cameras and don't loose my music.

I have the same van as you.

I found the clip-on mirror monitor to be ideal with a twin camera set up, never bothered to wire into the reverse switch, I simply use the switch on the monitor itself.

For me, being able to flick from one to the other enables me to check on the bikes periodically when I'm on a run.

Whilst the mirror location may impinge on your FF cam, you'll find the wiring can be hidden neatly around the A pillar trim and under the front edge of the headliner.

Be careful where you drill, if mounting the camera high!

I'm guessing you're keeping the S2 then?

Globebuster - The S2 has been given its marching orders. Not because there is anything wrong with it but because my circumstances have changed. I am replacing the S2 with a new Hobby Siesta T65 GE which has twin rear berths and a large garage. Unfortunately, the Hobby is 6.9m long and this will have consequences as I hope to tour Norway and Sweden next summer.

Thanks for that. I've spoken to our local car radio etc specialist and he has pointed out several units that have a dedicated camera input as well as AV input. Should be possible to switch between the two using the touch screen. I may get a cheaper model and go with the dedicated switch.

As you are talking to the Car Radio specialist I take it you are looking at fitting a double din car stereo with touch screen and as I said earlier, if you wire one of the cameras into an aux input, it cuts the sound from the radio as aux inputs are video+audio also it is a right pain selecting the inputs on a touch screen.

OK if you are using a monitor, but the switch makes it even easier.

Yes. Check the link for full details, I am not entirely sure what you are proposing, despite your description. 'A foward facing camera ?? don't understand why? I thought you meant 2 rearward camera's (which is what I have, for Monitoring my towed car and the road behind, And the tow coupling + reversing). Good luck, hope your plans work as mine have.

I replaced the 'Double Din indash monitor with this Dab+ Radio/CD/ usb unit :

Rayjsj- I have a forward facing "accident" camera which records on a loop. I intend to fit twin rear view cameras, one to take the place of the useless rear view mirror and the other to point downwards to keep an eye on my trailer when I am towing.

I asked about having the radio or CD on at the same time as the rear view camera and he was unable to answer >:-( .Something to watch out for.

You can have radio on using the camera input but not if you are using the the aux input.

If you think about the logic if you had your MP3 player in the aux input you wouldn't want the radio on at the same time. Aux inputs are both video & audio so they swith both the video & audio over.

I brought a Clarion NX502e it was an end of the range job so about ½ price still a few available, very pleased with it, got a deal with the DAB unit included.

I have also installed twin cameras in my motorvehicle and the trick they used was to get them to switch it over everytime I switch it to rear gear. Also, they can help you with the gridlines that dispalys the ditance between the cars while in revrcse. In that condition, the camera shows normal disply and while reverse the gridlines appear, to hellp with reverese. Also you will need a better screen for the AV perfromance.

When I brought mine, they were dearer on ebay. I bought online from AR24 in Germany cost me £540 including DAB exchange rate is better now. They have them for €499 without DAB or €599 with DAB charge about €20 for shipping. They don't take CC I paid through Paypal so exchange rate was not that good would cost at the moment about £420 or £503 with DAB including delivery, not bad for a unit that was originally a £1000.

The IGO8 Prima navigation is far better than anything else I have used before I brought it, I was undecided whether to get one with satnav has I had just brought a new Garmin a couple of months before very pleased I got the one with satnav.

I didn't intend spending that much original, but decided I might as well get something that did the job properly.
