Evasion - a possible reality?

We will take all means that we can to hound UK residents for the fines and payments because they are an easy touch and because we can.

We might take some half hearted measures to chase Johnny Foreigner because we can't be bothered.

I genuinely don't understand that. All they'll have to do is send one message to the European debt collection agency that's being used and leave the rest to them. The agency will be on a commission based on results.

So why wouldn't they?

The Debt Recovery Agency will probably post out a few threatening letters to chase the easy ones. Not worth chasing those who ignore everything.

I agree - we shall see - but forgive me if I am a little cynical given the way the UK motorist has always been treated the governments best kept soft touch, easy to milk cash cow!

I was just looking at the charges, the cheapest prepay is £10 I think !! so the phone will be my way of paying so the first one to do PLEASE post and tell us how it is done, does it come off your phone or do you have to give card details over your mobile? which I'm not crazy about doing.

Actually, your post has prompted me to sign up and I'm signing up because it's only £10.00!

I'll only use the crossing two or three times a year, which is four or six tolls, but there's no expiry date on the credit so I can't see that having a tenner tied up is a big problem.

The sheer convenience of not having to pay by mobile phone or forgetting and risking a fine has to be worth it.

Registration was incredibly easy and I paid by credit card. You can have more than one vehicle on your account as well.

Thats how it works all too often. Laws are devised for the convenience of the Police and the Courts. Speeding and Parking offences are pursued instead of Dangerous Driving because its easier to prove. People downloading images of children the Government deems to be pornographic are easier to catch and convict than child abusers etc

Possibly, but this is really nothing to do with that. They're probably not going to be too bothered with the occasional tourist but their target will be the foreign hauliers who flaunt the law and commit multiple offences.

That's why the new debt collection agency that's being set up has the power to ultimately confiscate vehicles. We're dealing in the main here with corporate bodies who cannot afford to have multiple court cases registered to their companies, not some French tourist.

It's clear that there are some people (not you by the way) who are so cynical that they believe nothing and at the same time believe anything, no matter how incredibly silly, if it suits their anti-government stance, but there's nothing we can do about them except let them whinge.

I have never queued on the Dartford crossing but as a very infrequent user that is an unfair statement. I have crossed for free when the local yobs set fire to a power switching station.

When I frequently crossed the Forth bridge there was the odd delay and that can happen when there was an accident so somewhat expected.

Interesting differences between the north and south. Our SNP government abolished tolls on all three payable crossings whereas the southerners want to continue to milk the motorists, so that's progress. :-D

the government have got to get money from somewhere else other than our excessive income tax so as to fund free prescriptions, eye tests, student grants, and elderly care, plus more!!!in bonny Scotland FACT! !don't worry us southerners will fund it.

"this work is due to be completed in spring 2015.

These are significant road works and road users can expect some impact on their journeys over the Crossing, but they are being planned to minimise disruption. We anticipate a greater impact on northbound traffic as the changes required on that carriageway are more complicated."

-----------------------------------------------------------

So says their official information, the facts are that it will not be finished until the Spring ... whenever that is.

Hi,

I live near the crossing and have Dart tags for both my Motorhome and Car.

I registered both today for the new system and Motorhomes will be charged as class goods vehicles form 30th Nov. So the standard MH charge if you don't have a dart tag will be £3.00, rather than the car rate of £2.50.

Its only 50p extra but that's a 50% increase from the previous MH charge of £2.00.

Over the course of a year that's a lot of 50p's from us motorhomers.

According to the web site motorhomes are £2.50 standard charge, you do not need a dart tag just pay the £10 up front and it is £1.67 a crossing.

Er, no! If you only go to Europe once a year then presumably you'll use the Dartford Crossing twice. Your £10 doesn't expire, so for next year you'll use the other half of your tenner.

You're losing the interest on a few quid for a year, but even if you never use it in the first year the typical bank interest on £10 would be 20p a year. If you're worried about having a tenner tied up somewhere and losing 20p interest, then I think that you have a bit of a problem!

And of course if you sign up you no longer have to pay by phone so you save the cost of phone calls.

For the ease of having to do nothing but drive over the crossing and let the company knock a fiver of my account I'm not really bothered about giving them the loan of a tenner.

If you however, object to giving them the loan of a tenner and are happy to have to make two phone calls to pay for each trip separately then good luck to you. I know what I think is the more sensible method.

And, if your're heading into Europe the first phone call will be from France (or Germany or where ever) and you might not spend the first night where there's a good signal, even if you have a good signal the call will cost a lot more than from UK.

I used the Dartford crossing on October 28th. the last time for at least a year, but consider the £10 advance payment the simplest, safest, and best method.

Surely, you will stop somewhere in UK before going across the channel, so I would think you call from you mobile whilst still in UK....??

Fortunately having moved from SE to SW UK, it's highly unlikely that I would ever use that part of M25l- and will just ensure when touring we don't go anywhere near there, or at least avoid crossing the Thames there!

Because we are all in this Together ( the Shxx caused by greedy bankers). ?

The Toll of the Severn Bridge will be abolished just as soon as the power gets devolved from the Tories.

(we may charge just a token charge to let you get out again though ;-) ) Ray

Me too, also I avoid the M6 Toll like Ebola. Hope the Companies that run them go bankrupt. Ray

The Dartford crossings themselves were paid for years ago, as for the M6 Toll !! PFI Conmen.
