MISTRELYN
Hi again Folks Looking for any advice that is out there on going to Netherlands at the end of May, about the 27th for 2 or 3 weeks. It will be our first trip abroad in the motorhome. We had several trips to Germany and France with the caravan and toured all over on the motorbikes but we have never been to Holland. We may also go to Denmark as my brother lives there and again we have never been. Thinking the tunnel would be the way with our Mini-Schnauzer on board with a first stop on the coast near Middelburg, then Delft and of course Amsterdam. Any advice on sites, sights and routes would be appreciated Cheers
laimeduck
John & Val Hi ..... we went for a week in Autumn 2013 and used some (marked *) of the following sites. This was a list a prepared before we went and we didn't use sites without a *. North of Amsterdam, Enkhuizen is a lovely little spot and you can travel up to it via Edam which is interesting - both less hustle & bustle than Amsterdam. Most of the sites we used were ACSI sites. Camping Gaasper has an easy metro ride into the centre of Amsterdam 15 -20 mins I think and you can buy tickets at the camp reception. Worth a call into Brugges on the way out or back - Bus from Camping Memling into Markt in Brugge centre, or easy to cycle in. Have fun! Will86
Go to see the National Cycle Museum in Nijmegen. Its the best in Europe. The cycles range from about 1814 and are displayed on several levels. There is a coffee shop. If approaching Nijmegen from over the river the museum can be seen on the right as you approach. Just after the bridge and when entering the built up area keep right ... right ... and it will take you down to the museum at river level. Well worth a visit especially as they bought some of my unusual exhibits. Will
Guest Had Enough
We've explored the Netherlands extensively and it's a fascinating country with some beautiful villages. Amsterdam is super if you like cities but, if there is one place that I'd urge you not to miss, it's here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2093144/Giethoorn-The-village-Netherlands-roads.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giethoorn It's incredibly beautiful and, if you have bikes, there are smaller and quieter versions of this type of fenland village within an easy ride. We love the Michelin guides and the Netherlands one is worth its weight in gold. http://goo.gl/Dn1ZXg
PJay
Lovely flat country, should be quiet in May/June, as all the Dutch campers are down in Spain/France, for the better weather We delivered a boat from Amsterdam all the way down the canals (large ones) to Breskens, then out along the Belgium/French coast , before coming back to Uk. Very friendly people, most of whom can speak English. The only reason we have not been in van, is the weather! We like the sun, as most Dutch seem to holiday in thier vans south, I guess , they think the same!! Enjoy your trip PJay
Rayjsj
Further South is Arnhem, we liked this Open Air Museum : http://www.openluchtmuseum.nl/ Which details all of the progress in buidings/Windmills(lots) and Country life in Holland, a bit like St.Fagans in Wales. Also if you are interested in the Airborne History of Arnhem Go here : http://en.airbornemuseum.nl/ Thats 2 days taken care of. In Amsterdam Do visit http://www.annefrank.org/ very Moving. Ray ps As others have said this is 'Pushbike Heaven', very flat AND cyclists mainly have priority over motor traffic.
Will86
Take cycles or hire them if you can, there are cycleways like our extensive footpaths. There are excellent cycling maps. At weekends you will meet young children to elderly grandmas all out on a cycle ride. We spent lots of time around Valkensvaard with cycle paths through nature reserves and forests. Wonderful Will
Bojitoes
Another vote for Arnhem - if you have seen the film A Bridge too Far its impossible not to visit. A good campsite on a bus route, good bars and restaurants. Bob
Sydney1
We went to the Netherlands a few weeks ago for half term and had a great time (helped by the unseasonally warm weather!) If you need a stop over after leaving the ferry I'd recommend the aire in Bruge or a little further out there is one alongside the canal in Beernam. We headed for the Zeeland area off the north coast and stayed at the following campsites; www.strandparkdezeeuwsekust.nl (plenty of hardstanding areas and my wife's new favourite campsite!) Easy access to the lovely town of Renesse. Take ACSI card, great showers and toilets, walks, cafe's along the beach etc). Very good restaurant on the site www.roompot.nl - Breskins site. Very large, good facilities for the kids.

Way2Go
Totally agree with Ray about The Arnhem Airborn Museum http://en.airbornemuseum.nl/ - The museum is modern and is very well laid out as it tells visitors the story of the ill-fated Operation Market Garden with some stunning displays and extremely moving accounts in words, video and pictures by those who were there. If that wasn't moving enough, a visit to the underground 'Airborne Experience' will transport you right into the very midst of the battle. After exiting through a glider you pick your way through the exhibits and enter Arnhem where you are surrounded by gunfire, flashing lights and huge newsreels of the fighting. A truly memorable and frightening experience. Also, the Netherlands museum at Overloon http://www.oorlogsmuseum.nl/en/ comprises 'The Dutch National War and Resistance Museum' where you will experience the occupation and the persecution during WWII, but also the resistance and D-Day through a series of rooms full of photographs, videos and personal accounts and effects. Also housed at Overloon is 'The Marshall Museum' which has more than 150 historical vehicles, vessels and aircraft. Anyone even slightly interested in military vehicles will find it an unforgettable experience, particularly if you hit one of the red buttons to turn on the sound effects!! In fact, if you can arrange to be there around the 16 - 17th May 2015 you can visit Militracks http://militracks.nl/ which is staged at the Overloon Museum each year. The 2 day event has lots of WWII vehicles driving and parading around a woodland course and you can even buy a ride in a variety of vehicles. There are also lots of military memorabilia. Agree with the others about Amsterdam. A must visit city and very easy to get to from Camping Gaasper.
