grumps
Hello I have a 1990 Talbot Express Rhapsody. In the last couple of weeks, with the engine running, when I turn the lights on the Temp. gauge and the Petrol gauge move higher by just over the thickness of the needle. When I turn the lights of they move back. Does anybody know where I should start looking for the cause. Grumps :-S
Dave Newell
I'm not sure whether the Talbot has one but it sounds like the voltage stabilizer is playing up. Many vehicles never used to have these and the guages would fluctuate with engine speed. During the late 60s most manufacturers added a voltage stabilizer (regulator) to the instrument panel to stop the guages reacting to voltage fluctuations. If fitted they are usually found behind the instrument panel. D.
spartan3956
Spot on its the voltage stabiliser i had one go and the gauges recorded what they wanted bit of a problem if your low on petrol. Pete
grumps
hello I dont think its the regulator as the gauges are perfectly stable in normal use If I turn my lights on without haveing the ignition on the gauges go to full scale. I think its an earth problem or a reley is sticking?
Dave Newell
Hi Grumps, I wish you'd said that in the first place. The most likely cause is an earth fault but where to find it is anyone's guess. Check all your earth points from the lighting circuits (under bonnet) then check earth points for the instrument panel. D.
lunartraveller
I agree with the earth problem,I had it on my Landrover exactly the same.It was the main earth from the battery. Geoff
Clive
And I would have given exactly the same guidance at each stage as Dave! Time to check for corroded earth connections and loose nuts!
