Fiat 2.5 TDI questions

Hi All Picked up our Fiat 2.5 TDI based Dethleffs A class yesterday, and have a couple of questions about the Fiat base. (Know very little about them!!) 1. I started it from cold and pulled away hard when I picked it up-got clouds of blue smoke for a few seconds and then it settled. When I read the handbook, it advises starting and driving slowly and with little acceleration until the temp gauge starts to move. Tried that and cant see smoke-is that what I was doing wrong, or do I need to get new stem seals?? (No smoke in normal use.) 2. It has the key transponder immobiliser. When I first turn the key, the light stays on. Every time, I have to turn off and back on again before it will go off. Is this normal? (It always goes off on the second try.) Many thanks for any help!!

Its a very good engine i had not a bit of trouble with the one i owned, yes it did give out a bit of blue smoke when starting up but when warm ran normally. It wasnt burning oil from the engine in fact it used very little oil through my ownership. It returned mpg around 30 and when towing a large bike and trailer about 27 so the pump was working ok. I changed was the cam belt after 5 yrs as a precaution. it fail mot due to a broken lip on the exhaust pipe to the manifold but was cheap to repair + a couple of exhaust mountings the old Mini type cotton reels not bad in 12 yrs. One thing you have to watch if you lay it up without running it is the waste gate sticking on the turbo. but it never happened to mine. As for the immobiliser i had an after market one so i cant help.

Having owned a number of Sevel TDs all have givng a puff of blue/grey smoke on startup from cold. Harsh cold engine acceleration will prolong the emmission and probably increase engine wear. Following the manufacturers reccommendations re startup and switch off of a TD engine is advisable for prolonged engine and turbo life. With regard to the transponder light, this has always gone out within a second or so of turning on the ignition with all my vehicles fitted with this type of immobiliser.
