Scotland in winter

Hello!

Yes, with the energetic help of the local gritter, carbage collectors and residents we luckily got out of the ditch and back on the road again.

Again: Thank you all!

In fact we do think very much of UK traditions, not only Christmas traditions.

Christmas Eve we stayed in Elgol / Skye. In lack of swan or peacock we had turkey for diner. Of course we also had Christmas crackers and the funny hats (or crowns) and left some carrots for Rudolph and the other reindeers.

It was a great fun for us all , especially of course for our daughter.

But in fact a Christmas diner with boss and collegues in Germany would never be like the one we observed in the pub in Moffat! And this is what we wanted to point out in our travel report. So please accept an apology, we didn’t want to offend somebody.

We are travelling through all parts of Great Britain on a regular basis for more than 15 years now. Last years we also went to Dorset and Dartmoor to spend our autumn holidays there.

So if you like, please have a look at some more travel reports from gnarz18

One point is an annoying one while travelling through Great Britain, but maybe you could give us some advice.

We do not only like the beautiful countryside, we also love to linger in the towns and cities.

We would prefer to use Park&Ride, but in 9 times out of 10 the Park&Ride space are blocked with a Max.Headroom barrier.

This happened to us during the latest Travels in Exeter, Salisbury, Maidstone, Cambridge, and so on.

So how do you organize your city trips?

Best Regards

Welcome to the Out&AboutLive forums, gnarz18.

As you have discovered, a lot of UK car-parks have barriers that will restrict entry of high vehicles.

When planning a visit to a UK city/town, you might find the following website useful:

http://www.motorhomeparking.co.uk/

Although the website was last updated this month, you will need to accept that some of the information may no longer be correct. Nevertheless, it is probably the most complete on-line reference guide for UK motorhome parking.

Pleased you enjoyed your trip.

How do we organise our trips? Like quite a few of us too much hassle in the UK apart from Scotland, so don't bother much anymore, much easier to go to France, Germany, Italy, Spain where we are made to feel welcome.

As Derek has posted, the motorhome parking site is handy for planning, but it is quite bizarre that councils make provision to keep cars out of towns, but don't consider the congestion caused by a slow motorhome trying to find a parking slot. Cambridge has only one p&r for large vehicles which means if you approach from the wrong side you have to drive throu town, some others allow motorhomes but you have to park and request the barrier to be opened, something which is not always apparent.

Hello again from Germany!

Thanks a lot for the replies and tips.

We learned that we are not the only ones who are desperately searching for a parking lot in your beautiful cities. But we won't give up and we will come back.

Regards, Michael and family

Wanting to visit our Capital city, Cardiff, and in particular the "bay" area, I had a long conversation with the councils parking provision department stating that we had a van of 6.5 metres and they advised there was only one car park I could use, and gave me explicit directions to it explaining that we would need to occupy two bays, and pay for two tickets, OK we thought, and duly arrived at the car park, only to find each parking bay was divided with small concrete pillars, but otherwise almost deserted so would have been very suitable.............another conversation ensued to the number given on the notice board that proved futile.........we never did get to see Cardiff Bay apart from driving around it briefly, still the "Big Pit" was worth a visit on our way home.
