Brakes

Were off to Spain in a few weeks, the MOT would have been due when we were there so we got our local mechanic to take the van for the test and then to rectify any faults ( we had squeaky brakes).

Although it passed the test the examiner mentioned the squeak but it wasn't an advisory. Next day armed with pads for all four corners the job was done. The squeak was caused by a stone getting lodged in the crumbly pad material. All the pads were in an awful state, the anti squeal shims were corroded to dust, one front pad had came away from the backing plate and the edges were just falling away on the rest.

I take it that these are the original pads coming up to eight years old 40K miles. It's another one of those things like tyres, they need replacing on an age related basis.

You don't mention the disc thickness?

Since they did away with Asbestos, some of the new lining material is so hard, requiring so much pressure, it seems to wear as much off the discs as it does the pads.

The fronts were down to about 4mm the rears still had around 10mm on them, as has been stated 'the materials so much softer' than it used to be so I degrades earlier, but the corrosion seems extreme.

Gocro,

You're not the first and certainly won't be the last!

Brambles had the same problem last summer... Link.

It may be worth reading Dave Newell's post half way down that thread. (And it is a real pity we have lost Dave on here, he was a real font of first hand knowledge and experience).

Keith.

PS And Peter asked about DISC thickness and not pads.
