Mike Chapman
Can anyone help? My base vehicle is a Fiat Ducato 15 2.3JTD 2006 model RHD and manual gearbox. It runs very well and smoothly. On longish journeys after 20 miles plus and especially in warm weather if I change down to 3rd gear I sometimes get a graunching noise transmitting through the gear lever. This only happens in 3rd gear. Fiat looked at the problem and said that there is not a gearbox problem but suspect the gearchange mechanism/cables and have checked, removed, lubricated the cables and realigned it. Problem still occurs in the same way. The cables do not appear to be touching any of the engine components or even close enough to touch with engine movement. All the mountings for engine and gearbox are OK. Have spoken to several dealers but the answer is always "Bring it in and we will take a look at it" and none have seen this problem before, so they say. If when the noise occurs I push the gearlever holding it in 3rd gear and tight into the gate I can change the severity of the noise. This does not occur in any other gear. The gearchange is light and positive and much better than most other Ducatos I have driven. Have you experienced similar problems with this model or do you know anybody that has and if so what was the problem and solution? It is driving me mad, mad I say!!! dickyc2
:'( That saddens me to hear that a main dealer says it's not a gearbox fault, i had a similar problem with a Kia Sedona 2.9td, this did it from 5th to 4th, and only after a longish run, i found that by changing the gearbox oil sorted out the problem, the reason i've said this is because being a fully paid up member of the grease monkey sociaty, i would have checked the level first, then gone through the rest of the checks, i'd advise you to speak to the manager and explain your situation and see what happens. Hope this helps :D
Mike Chapman
Hello Dickyc2, Thanks for the reply and info, I was beginning to think that I was the only one with a Ducato gearbox problem ;-) The Fiat dealer checked the gearbox including test driving it with me on-board but did not mention an oil change. I will give them a call and suggest this. If this does not cure the problem I will have to take it to someone like Delfin Design who I understand specialise in curing gear change problems. Quite a distance to drive clutching a straw. Thanks again, Mike. :-)
herdsmangs
Hi Mike, Saw your post in the latest MMM. I know it was a while ago but I wonder if you have got any futher with the problem. I have the same vehicle and the same problem. When I took it to Brownhills in Swindon they said it was the linkage and duly oiled/fiddled with it. I have to admit it seems a lot better but not completely resolved. Interested in your views. Geoff :-)
