Flat battery

Without knowing whether Westfalia have "jumped" the Ford electrics for split charge, or have fitted their own equipment (or even a combination of the two), I'm rather reluctant to enter the debate lest I muddy the waters.

What may be useful, however, is the significantly more detailed information on the electrics and other options that can be used in conversion, which is available in the Ford Transit "BEMM" documentation (which is invaluable for owners of Transit conversions) and is available for download by making the appropriate selection (Transit 2006.5) on this page:

A 2008/2009 Westfalia Nugget will be based on a FWD Ford Transit Mk 7.

The starter-battery will be beneath the driver’s seat and there’s no particular reason to think there will be more than one. I understand that the 140Ah gel leisure-battery (probably Exide-branded) is located towards the rear of the vehicle beneath the kitchen-unit and next to the inboard fresh- and waste-water tanks.

It should be simple to take multimeter voltage readings at the leisure-battery terminals, but accessing the starter-battery may require the driver’seat to be removed if a swivel mechanism is fitted to the seat. If necessary, I would have thought it should be straightforward to extract the heavy (about 48kg) leisure-battery.

The Nugget is unusual in having electrical control switching and an information-display in a ‘pod’ on the top of the dashboard as shown here

I don’t know who made a Nugger’s electrical components (Schaud or CBE?) but as the vehicle is German-built it’s more likely to use a ‘coupler/separator’ tp provide alternator charging to the leisure-battery than a UK-type split-charge relay.

Roy Wood Transits used to import Nuggets and may be able to advise Alan regarding the problem.

Been looking into this assuming the ford split charging is used as it is there. F2 already mentioned needs to be checked in the pre fuse box near battery. Also Fuse 77 in the Central junction box ( passenger junction box). Don't know where it is located but you should find it somwhere in the manual Derek linked to.

As Robin as suggested, following the wires from the battery should locate any after fitted components.

As I understand Alan’s problem, his Nugget’s leisure-battery is not receiving charge when the motorhome’s engine is running. The leisure-battery is also not receiving charge from the motorhome’s on-board battery-charger when the motorhome is connected to a mains hook-up. (Is that correct?)

Alan has disconnected the leisure-battery from the motorhome’s wiring and connected a newly-bought separate battery-charger to it. This battery-charger has, apparently, been able to put charge into the battery.

Following normal Transit Mk 7 practice Alan’s Nugget has its starter-battery beneath the driver’s seat. There’s also a ‘pre-fuse box’ as described here:

http://fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=112761

However, it’s likely that the pre-fuse box will play no part in Alan’s Nugget’s leisure-battery charging system. This is an educated guess based on the fact that the Westfalia Nugget was also built on the Transit Mk 6 that immediately preceded Alan’s Transit Mk 7. MMM reviewed a Mk 6-based Nugget in 2006

and it’s reasonable to think that whatever electrical equipment Westfalia used for Transit Mk 6-based Nuggets was also used for Mk 7-based Nuggets. As a pre-fuse box could not have been part of the Mk 6-based Nugget’s leisure-battery charging system (because Mk 6s did not have a pre-fuse box), it’s likely that it won’t be part of a Mk 7-based Nugget’s system.

The following link includes a reference to a 2007 Ford/Westfalia/Nugget manual that may help

Clicking on the "BA_Nugget-GB_02-07_Intranet.pdf (1553.93 kB - descargado 777 veces.)” reference should cause the manual to download. (Pages 76 & 77 may bre relevant.)
