Randonneur
I have just purchased my first motorhome after having had caravans for a number of years. This motorhome does not have an oven and the cost of installing a gas oven is about £700 (extortionate). As we will not be using hookups most of the time I wondered if there is anybody out there who can suggest an alternative? either to put on top of the hob or when the weather is fine on the BBQ. Clive
From a similar question burried in another post earlier from Bill "Get yourself a double skillet (cost about £50; weight 3.5 lbs) and you won't need an oven any more. I'm an enthusiastic cook and no longer even use the oven in the bricks-and-mortar home." Worth a look!
johnsandywhite
:-D Hi Randonneur. An alternative is a COB. It is a cross between a Barbeque and a Tandoori oven. It uses 5 or 6 brickettes in the bottom of the oven. When it is ready to use. You can cook a full chicken, several pieces of different meats, or even bread if you were bold enough to try. They can cook for around 2 hours. They are insulated so they can be put onto any surface without fear of causing any damage. Cost around £80. Happy cooking and Motorhoming. ;-) P.S. Welcome to Out & About Live. ;-)
Vixters other half
Treat your self to a Remuska and have as many roast dinners and baked pies as you can eat. Only 600 watts and takes up as much space as a large saucepan. We dont have an oven and this gizmo is the business as far as we are concerned. They cost about £90 and are worth every penny Bon appetite
twooks
You could also add 'tagine' to that list. This and the Remoska are available from Lakeland, http://www.lakelandlimited.co.uk/ - just use their search facility, available by mail order as well. I use the skillet, which comes in two sizes, the small one in the 'van and the large one at home. Available from D & F Promotions who generally turn up at the shows. Don't know their address offhand, but would think that if you search on 'D & F Promotions double skillet' you will find details and probably reviews and recommendations from other discussion forums. Randonneur
(lol) many thanks for all your replies. I think we are now settled on a Cobb (which is very impressive) and can be used without any electric and a Remouska which a friend of a friend has and swears by it but they only go onto hookups. I have also unearthed out of my store of junk (haven't we all got one of those) a small Tefal electric oven/grill - 1000 watt, so I think now that we will be covered for all occasions and can't wait to get going. I have priced the Cobb here in France and it is more expensive than in the UK and as we are going on holiday to UK in November we will wait and order it from there. Wingpete
We had same decision to make. Bought a mid size casserole type pan with lid. Special non-stick finish makes it suitable for all needs. Cooks eggs, bacon, toast, veggies, even whole chicken, and they neever stick. Demo was showing milk boiled 'til burned, and looked like piece of leather, and it just slid out when removed from heat. Eggs do perfectly (not boiled though )so for all round use, try a casserole dish of generous weight and quality.
