terry1956
Hi, I own an autotrail dakota on a 2006 plate. It has the fiat 2.8 jtd engine which I had remapped some time ago. Now I find myself needing to tow something behind the dakota and went hunting for the plate with all the weights on. On my old hymer this was on the outer sill and give all the details needed.what I did find on the dakota was just a uprated chassis plate inside the engine bay. Ok this just gives the max weight that the dakota can be, in yhis case just over 3.8 tons. However there is no train weight stated, my understanding is that this is 5.5 tons.but is it legal not to have the train weight plated on the motorhome. Derek Uzzell
One would expect there to be a ‘data plate’ on your Dakota providing maximum vehicle, train and axle weights, but the plate might well be in a completely different place to where it was on your Hymer. (Keep looking - it’s probably lurking somewhere...) The 2005 and 2006 Auto-Trail brochures (which should cover your 2006-plate vehicle) are here http://www.auto-trail.co.uk/media/downloads/brochures/2005%20brochure.pdf http://www.auto-trail.co.uk//media/downloads/brochures/2006%20brochure.pdf Both give a maximum vehicle weight for a Dakota of 3850kg and a maximum train-weight of 5200kg. terry1956
thanks for input. I have been all over the motor for the plate with know sign of it. I found the uprated plate inside the engine bay. and to say its not a very impressive looking thing is an under statement. The plate looks like its been made using photoshop and was held in place with some cable ties. I just always had the idea it was illegal not to have a plate showing total train weight and a break down of axle weights. maybe things have changed over the years. michael
Derek Uzzell
I’ve read occasional complaints about Auto-Trail data-plates,particularly when the base-vehicle’s chassis weights have been altered and the change shown by a stick-on label. For example http://www.pistonheads.com/Gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=1415354&mid=0&nmt=Towing+weight+for+this+autotrail+(Plate+picture) It’s likely that your Dakota started life with its data-plate properly riveted on. Perhaps some time in the past the rivets corroded away and the cable-tie retention method was used to hold the thing on. Or the rivets failed, the data-plate was lost and a replacement plate obtained. Or the motorhome you own is a completely different vehicle to what you think it is...
