Hymer H534 or H544

Not too concerned with the drive as it is for work purposes and not really touring, but something to bear in mind.

Must say, I do like the classic design of the older model, as you say, it has an appeal. The interiors of the newer older models seems to have exactly the same interior as the next model up.

Just had a reply from one dealer (HECK Caravan & Reisemobile GmbH & Co.KG).

I set out a few questions:

Size of freshwater tank?

Condition of tyres?

Exterior damage. Dents, scratches, hail ... etc?

Any extras not mentioned so far?

Availability of export plates ("Ausfuhrkennzeichen"), Registration Centre (Zulassungsstelle) ?

All electrics and gas working?

Engine manufacture?

His reply: "Sorry, too much work!"

I'm still laughing in amazement ... obviously business is good there!

LOL 8-)

I must say, I fancy the appeal of the older model Fiat :-)

If this is Pre-1994 ? I had a Talbot (same vehicle) of the same era, if the vehicle is LHD the gearchange will be on the coloumn (as it was designed) but if RHD it will be a 'Lash up' of linkeages that produce a very 'Floppy' and indistinct gearchange, plus on early vehicles 5th gear was in a seperate 'add on' to the gearbox and was starved of lubrication, resulting in 5th gear failures. This continued until about 2003/4 when a new gearbox was introduced, with an 'integrated' 5th gear. Without doubt the best models of the the Ducato were between 2003/4 -2006 the X244. prior to the X250. The early X250's were a 'can of worms' too, with water leaking over the engine and very high reverse gear ratio's.

Going 'early' is NOT all 'Roses and relaxing' !! Ray

Any recommendations for MH insurance once I hit the shores of Dover please?

I take is there's specialist out there?

If you are happy to drive it all the way home on 3rd party insurance then wait until you are home, you can get the German 3rd party insurance to cover you for longer periods so a month would make sense so you can get it registered, don't know if this cover includes theft.

If you want it fully covered once on UK soil there are only a few companies that will cover you on a VIN plate, NFU, Safeguard, Scenic are the ones I know the first two cover you for 30 days, Scenic only 14 days.

FIAT DUCATO HYMER 584 1994

Picking up from a dealer in Rastatt near the end of the month. He will assist me getting the 30 day export plates. I take it I can drive it in the UK within that period (3rd party only)?

In that time though, change lights, speedoo, attain a mutual recognition certificate through the Vehicle Certification Agency, MOT, register with DVLA.

I have the DVLA import pack.

YEH ... paperwork! :-S

Will drive the vehicle on export plates to UK home.

Because of the age, I don't expect to get a Certificate of Conformity, so will have to look at a Mutual Recognition Certificate.

Do I need though a MRC if the vehicle is over 10 years old?

I spoke to the Vehicle Certification Agency and promptly told to look at their website. A lot of help they are!

Hi Lenny,

I'm back now with my Hymer 584.

The condition is exemplary. The dealer could not have been more helpful and also dealt with the export plates etc in Rastatt :-D I just went along and paid afterwards..

C o C not required for the DVLA as vehicle is over 10 years of age. Just MOT, then document pack back to them. Sweet!

I have headlamp convertors. I have already spoken to a council run MOT station and he said 'deflectors' are fine. Just need to sort out fog/reversing lamp etc. I can easily swap the lamp plates across and will work fine. It's just on how to switch the wiring over. I've never done any wiring on a vehicle before, so it might be make it up as I go along. Any advice?

Nigel
