galaxyhunter 309
Thanks for the heads up on that. The air show is on our must do list for next year, along with Duxford. Given that we are unfamiliar with protocols etc what can you recommend for parking and travel to the airshow. And nearby camping, of course. Thanks in advance. pepe63xnotuse
Hi.. It's been quite a few years since we've been(and that would've been by car anyway)..but when it's on,I get the impression from "local" press that, as with many major events, the approach roads around it can be pretty much grid locked;and queued back for miles, and again, as with many events over here, no matter what you're driving, the ease at which you can access their parking , very much depends on what the weather is doing/has done....? :-S This is usually quite handy for finding sites, pubstops etc.. http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/ I don't know how long you'll be over for but it may be worth you looking at joining something likes this/these?: http://www.britstops.com/ http://www.motorhomestopover.co.uk/ As for "protocols"...well, for Motorhome/campervan parking in general, with our vans I've always found it best to assume that you can't, until you know for sure, that you can... ;-)

Billggski
It's in FAQs- visitor information. Even camper vans prohibited.
pepe63xnotuse
...nor can you put up a gazebo, take your dog, light a bbq, use a gas cooker, nor fly a drone.. Good God man, you can't even fly in with your own plane anymore..not unless it's "interesting"... (damn it! *-) ) It hardly seems worth going!?... Billggski
It's an incredible day out, but advance booking only this year to prevent the traffic jams. Kids go free.
pepe63xnotuse
Billggski- Yes, as I say, it's been a few years since we went and it was pay on the gate then... the queues then were pretty bad, and I don't think it was anywhere near as big/popular as it appears to be now. But as you say, changing to Advance booking only should help things along a bit... ;-)

IMO if you're into airshows then Shuttleworth is the place to go, you will be much closer to the flight line than any other show, and if the wind drops off in the evening you will see some of the oldest aircraft in the world take to the skys. Guest Joe90
The entire reason I flagged this up was because there were quite a few camper vans the last time we went. It would be interesting to know now it's a booking only show if during the booking process you had to specifically mention your mode of transport there, and the implications of arriving in even a car sized camper, quite why they have now decided to discriminate against us as a group is a mystery, I made an enquiry, and a formal complaint, which achieved nothing, perhaps Duncan and or MMM may want to contact them and maybe run an article on why its readers are suddenly not welcome, unless they leave their leisure vehicles at home. galaxyhunter 309
Thanks for the info regarding this airshow and Suttleworth. Ok, added to my must do list. Is there not an airshow just outside of Paris that has lots of vintage aircraft and WW1 aircraft? I am sure I discovered that on the net a few years ago. One of my other little passions are steam trains. Art set in iron. I will seek out experiences with trains as well. And GB, being the birthplace of trains.......well....heaven!! Once again I am impressed by the quality of respondents on this forum.
PeteH
Hi I recently E-mailed the organiser. Asking WHY?. As some of us need the use of their own facilities during a day long show, the temporary one`s being largely unsuitable for some disabilities and Specific Dietary needs come into the equation. I have suggested that a Blanket ban Could be viewed as Discrimination?. We will see what they have to say (if anything). Pete

(Runs by the front of my house) Have a look here for 1/3rd steam trains running on 13.5 miles of track since 1927 - not toys, they run a regular service and take kids to school. ( Just so you feel at home, some of the 13 loco's have Canadian Pacific whistles I am informed!) http://www.rhdr.org.uk/locomotives.html
Will86
Possibly the numbers of paying public decrease with Motorhomes. 10 large vehicles = 15 smaller ones. Ask Way2go he's a regular visitor. Will
Will86
Reading the information Campervans are not permitted. Nothing on Motorhomes which are a different species ? There is a disabled access area ... but if a disabled persons' only vehicle is a campervan fitted with a wheelchair lift what then? Some large public displays have a dedicated Motorhome area presumably this does not. Will

That would be La Ferte-Alais, we took a N28 there one year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Fert%C3%A9-Alais_Air_Show p.s. on the steam train front, there's quite a few 'heritage' tracks around the country, we've been on a few. gf like to travel on the day trips organised by http://www.railwaytouring.net/ they do UK wide tours and I think some worldwide as well. There is a disabled access area ... but if a disabled persons' only vehicle is a campervan fitted with a wheelchair lift what then? Some large public displays have a dedicated Motorhome area presumably this does not. Their term "Campervans" will be a cover all of 'leisure vehicles with sleeping and domestic facilities'. I doubt very much the style/shape will be of any interest to them....they just don't want folk rocking up with their own 'accommodation on wheels'. Local businesses should do ok. I see there is an Hotel advertising on the website at just £55 a night for a double room, and there are bound to be some 'cheap' CC sites around. G-AMPY
Hi All, been lurking on here for a while but had to pop up and reply to this... Have any of you considered their might be a good reason why motorhomes/campervans are banned from the airshow? Cosford is an activie military airfield, so I assume they must seek permission from the MOD to have public on site? Having seen the effects of motorhomes/large vehicles on wet grass at other shows I assume that is a fair reason for the policy, as airfields must have perfectly flat grass for aircraft to fly. Also, being an active military base imagine there must be strict security implications too? "Discrimination" is a very strong word to use, maybe the vehicle policy was forced on the airshow by the MOD who own the land? I think it's unfair to declare war on a charity event which raises millions of pounds for good causes. Park your motorhome somewhere else and cycle/get to the rain to the show and enjoy the planes! Just my 2p worth! B-)
Billggski
Welcome g-Andy, from the tone of your first message I think you'll fit in well with this forum. I think the ban was because the parking is all on grass and larger vehicles have had to be towed off in the past. I intend to go in an open top Land Rover for the best view, and possibly earn some money rescuing others!
Brock
Interesting they boast about improving traffic flow by "the introduction of off-base parking" but in the FAQs say, "camper vans are prohibited on the airfield." Makes me wonder whether you are allowed to park off-base in your motorhome.
