Good morning everyone.

Methinks we need a bit of extra space, have Hymer and all traditional awnings for motorhomes appear to be to short, height wise. Thought of safari room, but sounds a problem if there are high winds. Which mean you have to keep taking the thing down. Any ideas ......... you clever people ;-)

With a Safari room, you do not have to take it down in high winds. It has lots of large metal pegs that keep it down, attached with strong rubber bands, just like a tent. We have a Fiammi one which attaches to our Fiammi Zip awning, does not take much to put it up, and my son has in the past erected a small tent inside it as extra sleeping, as the room it self can be a bit drafty for that. Hope this helps If the winds could take it down, it would also tip the van over , and I down't imagin you are going somewhere in a HURRICANE

In my opinion, wind-out sun blind awnings should be considered just that, sun blinds. Yes, you can add sides and a front but they're still not as wind proof and as good as a proper separate motorhome awning or tent that's designed for the job.

One big problem with them and with motorhome drive-away awnings is that, when you have to move the 'van, you need to wind them in or remove them from the attachment point on the MH. You may wish to move the 'van for several reasons, to go to a service point, change pitch or take it out for a day.

Our solution is to go for a separate, quick-erect tent. This can go anywhere on the pitch. You can put it at the back and still use your wind-out awning for sun and rain protection. In windy conditions you can dine in the tent and the one we have has an optional extra of an inner tent, which gives you an extra bedroom.

There are many available and some are cheaper than ours. We went for ours because: it's a good make, it's very simple and speedy to erect and the size is just right for us, neither too big for the average pitch nor too small for setting up a table and chairs to dine in if there's a cold breeze.

We'll also use it to protect our scooter and bikes and chairs etc. if there's a chance of high wind and we can't keep our wind-out sun blind in position.
