colleen
being new to this motorhoming, I followed the Autosleeper handbook advice of leaving the drain valve open to the hot water tank and also all taps to the outside open over last winter - now, having read some of the replies to "of mice and motorhomes" posted on 12th october. I'm in a panic. any advice? >:-(
trigrem
Hi Colleen, Don't panic! We had a problem with mice, our van is stored on a storage site, and the mice were looking for somewhere warmer for the winter. I crawled underneath and filled all holes I found with expanding foam, the most likely culprits are holes where electric cables are fed through the floor. There may not appear to be any space around the cables but the mice found them. Had no problems for the last 2 years since sealing all holes. PS Another possible problem area is if you have an air inlet to a convector heater, I put a shield of perforated metal around mine. Doug
Clive
Not sure what van you have but our 9+year old Autotrail had all the holes filled as you describe from new by Autotrail as standard. We have never (touch wood) had any infestination in the MH. Which is more than we can say for the bricks and morter!!
Dave Newell
Last winter, whie I was rebuilding our 'van I had mice in the workshop, they kept hiding dog food (the dry kind) in my top drawer in the office. Then later I found they'd been making nests in the 'van as well, thankfully no serious damage done. When we put the 'van back on the road the performance seemed a little lack lustre so I decided to give it a service. When I removed the air cleaner I found two good handfuls of dog food inside it! Now it's getting cold again I'm keeping a look out for the little blighters! D.
Lizzy
We've just had our inhouse bathroom stripped. Underneath where the bath stood was a blue j-cloth with nesting material in. The mouse had stamped the j-cloth into a round and filled it with fluff ....... can you imagine the power that had taken a little mouse to pull a WHOLE j-cloth under the floorboards? And the giggle is I hadn't missed the cloth ......... ;-) The fluff probably came from under our bed :-S never had problems when we owned felines ...... Ranger
Hi colleen, there are mouse repelling gadgets that make a sound that mice, also flies etc: do not like so they avoid areas where these are fitted. They are inaudible to the human ear, also pets. There was a string of posts in the old MMM Forum perhaps 18 months ago, on this thread. I have them in various places and they do work but mine are mains operated. One of our Forum members at that time found battery operated ones for their 'van as it was parked away from their house therefore no 240 volts. It is said that a mouse can get through a hole the size of a pencil. I once many many years ago had an adder get up into the engine compartment, obviously searching for a warm nights sleep.
