Help! The Emission Control System

On a 2010 build 2.2, 120bhp Boxer has me puzzled and is driving me mad.

The said warning light stayed on when engine started. All local garages shut, RAC sent someone who thought it was egr valve which he confirmed with his code reading machine. He cleared the fault and we drove a couple of miles without the light coming on. As it would take time to get bits he said use van and see if light comes on again.

900 miles later it again stayed when starting and running. Still stayed on when I took the van for a service when dealer said “our equipment can’t read fault but we’ve switched it off. Try it.”

700 miles later it came on again as I stopped and put van into reverse and moved off. Local garage got a P2299 fault which his reader said “Accelerator Brake Feasibility”. I know what each word means but not what the phrase means. The fault was cleared.

Guess what – 400 miles later the light stayed on when I started the engine. As the van performs as normal with this light on I drove 200 miles home, stopped engine a couple of times but light remained on when I started up.

Went out to van this morning to take to local mechanic and when I started the engine light went out!!

My initial thought was ‘great’ but now I wonder why did it not come on? My computer knowledge says that when a sensor detects a fault a ‘flag’ is set in the EEPROM to allow the garage to read the event later and this same flag puts the light on when the engine is next started.

Help please for cause of the light coming on and now not staying on.

Thanks

Dave

On my Jaguar diesel, which has a Peugeot / Citroen based engine, it has an electronically controlled egr valve. When it gets clogged, a sensor can't "see" and gives warning light. This can be reset by switching off, but eventually will put the vehicle into limp home mode. (It did this in Alps)

I don't know this engine but it could a partially blocked egr valve and needs cleaning or replacing.Good luck.

T'other year when we had our mouse problems the engine management light would come on when the mouse 'hit' the Air Mass Valve, when it went out was a bit of a lottery, Some days could drive several hundred miles with several stops with no problems but the light stayed on, other times the light might go out after 10 or 20 miles, or after a stop. Never could predict if the light would come on or not after first start up of the day.

The "Italian tune-up" tends to work for your dpf, but didn't work for my egr.

A colleague's brother-in-law some years ago ran a Ferrari dealership in Australia. He told me than when customers came in complaining that their cars weren't running well the first thing they did was take them out of town and give them a good work-out. Money for old rope was the phrase he used.

"Accelerator/Brake feasibility";

This means that the accelerator and brake pedal have been pressed at the same time.

Stop doing it.

No more faults.

Thanks Nick - I asked for that didn't I. At the time I had just pulled onto a sloping pitch which felt softer than it looked and as I had to reverse uphill to get off I was in a hurry to move and didn't use handbrake so foot could have been on both pedals.

Have you any suggestions as to why the Emission Control light sometimes stays on when the engine is atarted and why this last time it stayed on for a couple of hundred miles but it went out the next day?

Thanks

Dave
