Annie T
Hi, We are planning to go to Normandy in our motor home next month and plan to visit the WW2 battlefields etc. Any recommendations on camp sites fairly near would be much appreciated as we don't have a car with us only bikes, also have dog so can't leave her too long. Also advice on which battlefields best to visit etc would be great. Thanks, Ann
malc d
There's quite a nice municipal campsite in St. Mere Eglise - with a museum dedicated to the airborne forces just a short walk away. The church in the town centre still has a parachute hanging from the church tower to commemorate the paratrooper that got stuck up there. ;-)
Guest Joe90
I'm not sure if the OP has visited France before in a motorhome, but Normandy can at times seem like one huge free open air museum, parking is plentiful and free at all the major sites of interest that we've ever visited, apart from Le Mont-Saint-Michel, which is a tourist hotspot, so there is no need to leave your dog for any length of time at some distant site, and aires are also plentiful,( we use them almost exclusively ) as are conventional sites, my advice therefor would be to simply find the nearest tourist information office once you are in the region, again plentiful and found in the smallest towns, gather up a bundle of tourist info ( yes in English ) and work out your plans from there, just simply go,............................ motorhoming heaven. ;-) http://en.normandie-tourisme.fr/normandy-tourism-109-2.html
lennyhb
We have been the last 2 years and will be there again this year, only place we have found a bit awkward to stop is Juno beach. St. Mere Eglise & Arromachess open up fields for Motorhomes to park on, free of course. It going to Arromachess you want to stay at the field on the top of th cliffs on the East side, the one on the south west side of town is on a slope and really for cars. Caen museum is well worth a visit and you can stay in either of the car parks. Also very good dance which I think will be on the 6th this year at Carentan, Liberation Ball at the Hippodrome (Race course), €5 entry, beer & wine €2. As Mike (Joe 90) says just go and don't worry about it, last year was their busiest year being the 70th anniversary we never had a problem finding anywhere to stop. Can't help with sites don't use them. Some photos in my gallery. Edit: You don't need to leave your dog, it's France they are welcome every where including restaurants. Matrix Meanderer
The Adria Owners Club have just finished a rally based at the excellent Le Cormoran site at Utah Beach. It's a bit pricey but was excellent for our rally. We cycled to the Utah beach Memorial and then on to the main museum and cafe. You can also cycle up to the large gun battery close by. The American Military Cemetery at Colleville sur Mer has extensive free parking as does the Pointe du Hoc. The Arromanches Musee du Embarquement gets very busy so go early or late. terry1956
There is a small stop over next door to the normandy museum in bayeux. Also take a look at the small museum in tilley-sur-surs. You will find motorhomes parked up all over the place as the french are easy with parking. If you go to utar dont forget to look up the remaing german positions.to find them drive as far along the road with the sea to your left.at the end of the road, park up and carry on walking until you see the big red one site.the german positions are in the hill behind the marker.michael

Very short walk into town. Don't bother with the Aire during D-Day week it's small and cars even park in the service bay.
fesspark
It is a very interesting area to visit, as others say plenty of parking, museums ect, just be wary of broken glas on carparks as thieves do work these area,s, but as long as you are cautious no problem, fesspark,ex forces and long time motorhomer
Barryd999
Unless you really love campsites forget all about them in Normandy. Plenty of Aires and wild camping The aire at Arromanches does get busy an is cramped but park there or on the car park opposite if you cant get on, have a look and then drive 3 miles west to Longues Sur Mer which has the most intact gun battery of the Atlantic wall. Carry on to the cliff edge and there is wonderful free parking with plenty of space overlooking the sea and the Mulberry Harbour. Go further west and do not miss the American Cemetery at Colevile Sur Mer. Free overnight parking on the car park outside the official car park. You could spend half a day there and there is a fantastic free museum. Also free overnight parking at the Museum at Pegasus Bridge.
