Sleeping bag recommendations

Currently use sheets and duvets, a bit of a faff (not a fixed bed) and because you're sleeping right up to the side walls, duvets tend to slip off.

So we're going over to bags.

Looking for square shape (not the mummy type), 3/4 season warmth, ideally 2metres plus long, 90cm plus wide.

Not Duvalays please, we already have the memory foam toppers.

Any suggestions?

I know you don't want Duvalays but we have found then great over the last 8 years as you can vary the memory foam thickness and the duvet rating according to needs and climate.

As you already have the foam and the duvets you could consider buying the covers only - or making up your own if you are handy with a sewing machine?

At £39.95 per cover cheap they are not but as they are made with good quality materials (well ours are!) they do last well and there is no way we would ever go back to 'ordinary' sleeping bags!

It is so easy to add or take away extra layers and as a bonus it is so easy to get in and out of for night time perambulations too!

If you suffer from cold feet syndrome their one failing is poor fitting and duvet coverage around the shaped foot area but I just use a small blanket tucked under and folded over the bottom of the bag which does the job perfick.

If your duvets keeping slipping off - do you just need king size ones - we have no problem with ours.

Occasionally we use a double sleeping bag, but one that can be converted to two singles.

It's quite an old one and can't trace the maker on current websites - but others ( Coleman ? ) may supply something similar.

I hate sleeping bags, never used one for years even in the tent. Last year did a bit of island hopping whilst volunteering and borrowed a sleeping bag, it was awful, felt like I was in a straight jacket.

If you are certain you want one, try a 'sleeping pod', these are about 8" wider than normal sleeping bags.

I agree with Tracker.

Duvalays are really sleeping bags but with multiple advantages:

1)Easier to wash, plus you can easily change sheets part way through a long trip

2) quick to make up and quick to pack up than sleeping bags (those zips are a pain) plus if you use the travel bags as we do, easy to throw out of the way ( during the day ours live on cab seats and when travelling on a back seat)

3)flexibility, we have the different tog levels duvets and chose the one appropriate to time of year and destination.

We have had for about 7 years and we travel about 12 plus weeks a year in the Mhome, they seem to go on and on, so for us better value than ordinary sleeping bags ( the high performance down sleeping bags are in a different category and price)

We have multiple sleeping bags, both mummy (for use when trekking) and several box type we have used in motor homes and caravans over the years, but haven't used for some years now.

That sounded like a good idea, but I checked the measurements on Duvalays website, and our existing memory foam toppers are too wide.

But going by most other comments, might just splash out on the full Duvalay experience anyway - you can't put a price on a good night's sleep. :-D

Thanks all.

.

A steady hand and/or straight edge and an electric carving knife will sort that out in minutes.

Socks are only for wearing with sandals apart from which you would need a very big sock to cover the end of a Duvalay!

Yes......in a nutshell buy a top quality make from a specialist Camping shop...not GO Outdoors as they are just a 'supermarket' and none of the assistants know anything about what they are selling.

I use a Vaude sleeping bag which i bought from a Camping & Mountaineering specialist. Cost almost £60 which at the time was quite expensive.......BUT it's now 25 years old and only just beginning to show signs of wear in small areas. The zip is metal and never had any problems. In cold weather it's very warm.....far warmer than any duvet. When i've been in hot countries i just sleep on top until it gets cool. It will pack in it's own 'stuff bag' or cram into a very small place.

Washing it is a piece of cake though you do need to do it in a machine. On a warm day with a bit of breeze it takes around a day to dry through. On a hot day you can half that.
