This may be of interest to people with built in gas tanks

Email from EuroTunnel below:

We are pleased to be able to announce a change to the regulations regarding the

transport of such vehicles and write to advise you of the new arrangements.

There is a change to the regulations regarding the transport of such vehicles.

With effect from Monday 28th June Caravans, Campervans, Motorhomes and other recreational Vehicles fitted with LPG tanks for the purpose of heating, lighting, cooking or refrigeration will become eligible to use Eurotunnel service.

Customers wishing to use the service with a vehicle fitted with an LPG tank are asked to note the following conditions.

The tank must be part of the standard equipment of the vehicle.

The tank/vehicle must be fitted with a capacity gauge.

The tank must not be filled to more than 80% of its capacity.

The amount of gas carried in the tank must not exceed 73 litres or 47kg.

All valves must be in the off position.

The carriage of portable gas cylinders will still be permitted.

Customers must keep gas cylinders and their appliances switched off at all times.

No more than 50kg (maximum cylinder size 47kg) can be transported in any one vehicle.

Leaking or inadequately secured cylinders will not be accepted.

All vehicles carrying LPG under these arrangements will be inspected prior to transportation. This does not affect the current regulations regarding vehicles powered by LPG, which remain ineligible for transport with Eurotunnel.

Eurotunnel have special prices for campervans and caravans travelling at certain times,

So what's changed exactly? Have been using service for years as a frequent traveller and can't see a difference from current requirements.... unless I'm missing something?

The requirement is that all gas tanks and bottles are turned off at source and that means the valve on the tank itself, which most tanks do have, has to be turned off and accessible enough for Eurotunnel staff to physically check, which is fine if your tank's valve is easily accessible but a real pain if it is hidden away under the van.

Some folk have got away with turning the gas flow off in the van but I guess that is more to do with sloppy or inept checking than a rule change and the question remains - do you feel lucky!

Gas bottles are not a problem because they are in the gas locker and easily accessible to turn off and check but underslung tanks are a different ball game entirely so do be aware of the pitfalls before booking the Tunnel.

At the moment vans with built in LPG tanks are not allowed to use Euro Tunnel

Really - since when?

They were last year but with the proviso that they, like bottles, are turned off at the tank outlet.

LPG propelled vehicles as I understand it are not acceptable to Eurotunnel but habitation gas tanks were?

I have not checked the Tunnel website of late but has that changed?

We used the tunnel yesterday 28 May without a problem. Our 'van is an iH600 with 25ltr gas tank. I understand that the tank valve is accessible only by removing a panel underneath the vehicle, but the inspection staff were satisfied that the gas tap inside the 'van, under a side bunk, was in the closed position.

The paragraph above is what interests me - special price being higher or lower?

Wrong.....this has never been the situation. Have used refillable LPG tanks since 2007 and used tunnel at least 3 times a year since, and like everyone else never had a problem....

Sorry mac but that is not correct - vans with built in LPG tanks which uses gas for propulsion have never been allowed but those with them who only use the gas for domestic stuff have always been able to use it.
