Black forest area. What to do....

Hi Chris / Georgie

Switzerland has so many sides and not only the alpine landscapes that we Brits tend to associate with it.

There's a good campsite just over the border when coming down from the Black Forest just past Schaffhausen. It's on the confluence of the River Thur and Rhein with moderate hillscapes and not far from the famous Rheinfalls. Good special cycling tracks too.

For lakes and mountains, I personally like the Italian speaking part Tessin with Lago Maggiore and the "Cento Valli".

Hope you enjoy your trip.

Alan

Sorry my lord ('judge')

There's a well equipped campsite here, which can serve as a base for exploring the black forest. Also close to the autobahn for further travel.

There's a video too, although in German, it's possible to follow and gives an idea of facilities and the nearby area. Thermal baths on site as well!

Hope that's of interest

Must have improved then. Quite possible, as we last passed through in '97, and before that in '89. Before that we stayed in Switzerland for a few days in about '72/3. Getting in/out on those occasions was quite time consiming. Haven't been back since, mainly because the vignette seems such poor value for one transit only (seldom come back the way we went down :-)). Undoubtedly good value if a frequent visitor, though.

While it makes more sense if using both ways think its good value for what you get. But way cheaper then via France particularly if over 3500 or a tag axle. Superb roads and views.....

Only if you'd use autoroutes through France. :-) Also, bear in mind that the vignette doesn't apply to vehicles over 3,500kg, which have different tolling systems, but also that they have to pay to use all Swiss roads.

through Switzerland over 3500 probably works out cheaper and makes sense one way....why toll through france? we come back toll free through france towards Luxembourg, then Belgium - tunnel ( we might just pay the small toll near Strasbourg..

any more suggestions for black forest..the cuckoo clocks ticking! :D

We returned home from our recent trip via a bit of the Black Forest, one stop stood out. We stayed the night on a stell at the small village of Shiltech, the stell was in a car park but a lovely spot next to a very attractive river and had free unmetered hookup and water, no toilet dump. The village is a very attractive place and has a café selling the best Black Forest gateaux I have ever had.
