We a couple who are looking to travel down to Lake Garda in the next few weeks in our motorhome. Can anyone recommend two sites around the lake for a few days each before we travel back into France. We are ideally looking for sites close to a town for evening's out. Thanks Andy.

Most of the sites around Lake Garda are either the big, beachy types around the SE corner or are 1-2 km out of town or village, in a tarraced arrangement away from the stony lakeside further north.

We did however discover (in the CC Club Guide, although it's no longer in there) a small site at Malcesne, just on the edge of the old town, so perhaps ideal for what you want, It is however crammed into the central space of a "tourist village" of holiday flats, so our MH of 7m was a big as you could sensibly take in there and it would be better to phone ahead to make a booking, to check it's not full. Nice enough once you are in there, with some lake view and decent toilets and showers, some modern.

But one hundred meteres and you are strolling through medieval streets among eateries and tourist shops - and there's even a Spar Shop nearby too. Ten minutes at most to reach the harbourside. We have stayed there three times, once for at least a week.

Proprietor is called Antonio, very helpful, some English. Villagio Touristico Priori, +39 045 7400503

Bella Italia, Pescheria. Very large site, lots of facilities, easy walk round lake to Pescheria and choice of restaurants on site and in Pescheria. Also convenient for boats trips round the lake. Not cheap but you get what you pay for.

Sorry Wills but not the sort of massive holiday camp site that we like. stayed on the Aire outside one night years ago and thought it terrible! impossible to get a table for dinner and the crowds! This is July..may be more tolerable outside main season.

Two that we like: camping Fornella near Salo. and camping Tonini near Malcesine. Like most places a bike transforms the experience :-D

It gets very busy in the next few weeks, booking necessary. you can look through the campsite guides on the net and then put the address into Google Earth or maps and see how close it is to towns. There may even be street view so you can almost walk along the road and eye it up.

Camping La Rocca 2.5 kms north of Bardolino on east shore.

Walking distance along coastal path to Garda Town and Bardolino.

A lot of lake ferries call at Garda Town so after a 30 min walk good for trips around Lake.

camping La Ca, Padenghe Sul Garda, stayed in early June lovely terraced site super views of all the goings on on the lake, but we didn't stray far, happy to sit and look at the views

cheers alan

We spent 5 days on Fornella a couple of weeks ago and it is an excellent quiet site, we were about 5 metres from the shore. But it is a bit far from the village and not a pleasant walk. We drove the full circuit of the lake and I must say that a lot of the sites and villages were the kind of busy place we avoid like the plague.

As I said bikes make the difference! You can park up in Salo? there is a massive car park. Not on market day though!

We have booked a site in Lake Garda for the end of July - It's called Camping Weekend. It was the only one we could find that had any space! I think it was also on the Caravan and Camping Club website.

Have heard of it but not on the lake hence the availability I guess....Lake Garda the Italian equivalent of Beverley hills...What do yo expect at short notice. We book in December for July/August. that's not to say you will not find availability if prepared to drive around ..

hi all,

stayed on site on the lakeside last year, the site was acsi and c.c and caravan club.

it was called Camping Village San Francesco. In our opinion awful. The location was good but staff left a lot to be desired. Also like the rest of Italian sites they pack as many in as possible. Very expensive outside of any discounts.

have a nice trip

derek

I have stayed on a site on Garda but cant remember which it was, near where has been mentioned.

But, if you go over to Lake Iseo, in Iseo theres a cracking little place on the water called Punta d'Oro.

Edit.

Just looked on the map - it was here 45.460405, 10.632111

nice site but cant comment on the town nearby, Id expect it to be lively tho.

Don't forget to visit at least one of the gelateria in the harbour area in Bardolino Cristallo's said to be the best Italian ice cream and a good reward for bike ride or a walk.

Also the wine museum at Cantina Zeni with tasting wine, olive oil and balsamic vinegar

cheers alan
