Mike B.
Hi and welcome to the site I would suggest you make a list of all the things you want, then all the things you specifically don't want and then have a look at some for sale on classifieds/dealers/ebay before going any further. Just and overcab and a rear lounge as necessities wil take forever to narrow down. Also, try out an overcab bed if possible as they can be a devil to get up into and may feel claustrophobic when bedding etc is all in place. Guest Joe90
Ebay or Autotrader mind you having briefly had an overcab bed it's the last thing I'd be looking for, unless being sweaty and claustrophobic doesn't bother you. ;-)
StuartO
There are dealers who specialise in lower cost motorhomes and there is one in Warton, Lancashire that has grown considerably as a business in recent years, now stocking 30 or 40 MHs at any one time. Their website is http://www.motorlands.co.uk/ I suspect they buy from auctions and repossessions as well as from the trade which wants to concentrate on newer, cleaner MHs and some of their stock is in need of a bit of internal TLC and refurbishment. But the mechanics of the MHs will be sound and they stock plenty of well built models (eg Hymers) which should have no water ingress problems. Buying from them is it's a way of stretching your budget at the price of putting some effort yourself to refresh your purchase.
zombies
The pull down beds on a class vans are great, more space.
Guest pelmetman
We've never had a problem using the over cab for the last 23.5 years, although I did upgrade the foam from 3" basic foam to 4" quality foam after a couple of years ;-) ............. Advantages of a over cab...... 1......Bed permanently made up..... 2......Steering position not compromised if a quick getaway required...... 3......Rest of the camper is accessible....... No doubt we'll get to the stage where we'll struggle to get up the ladder, and will have to move downstairs one day 8-) ..............
Billggski
Another vote for overcab (now seem to called "alcove" by dealers). Always ready, takes up no interior space, kids can go to bed early and a much shorter MH. Some may be lower than others, but our Dethleffs has plenty of height and proper bed springs. The downside is wind resistance and height, which makes you close to 3metres so you have to stop at French tolls to avoid class 3 payment.

You do need to be happy with what you are buying and the person you are buying from but you will get a newer model for your money.
