Hi. Well our 1989 hymer b 644 with a 2.5td engine U25 673 has blowen another head. What other engine can be put into this. Im not going to rebuild the head again but rather replace full engine with one from brakers. The gear shifter is on the steering column but I was wandering can a more Modern engine be put in and put a hole in the floor for new shifter. Thanks Colm

Changing to a non standard engine is not for the faint hearted :D .............

Especially as I suspect yours maybe front wheel drive, so probably even more complicated :-S .......

If I was in your shoes and wanted to keep the camper, I'd get the engine rebuilt by a reputable company such as "Ivor Searles", alternatively if your planning on getting rid then a engine from a breakers would probably be cheaper :-| .........

Welcome to the Out&AboutLive forums, Colm.

A similar inquiry was made in 2011 on the Tabot Owners Club forum

http://www.talbotoc.com/2-5-turbo-diesel-engine-replacement-options-t3065.html

and you’ll note that the person who asked the question eventually fitted the same (but much better condition) motor.

It might be useful to know the type of cylinder-head problems you’ve been experiencing, as it seems strange that there have now been three successive failures. Assuming that all the failures had the same cause, I would have thought it would be preferable to address that cause (a warped cylinder-head perhaps) and correct it, rather than replace the complete powerplant with an unknown-quantity motor sourced from a vehicle-breaker.

As pelmetman warns, fitting a motor that was not used in the chassis on which your motorhome is based would be a ambitious task and I’m guessing that your Hymer is left-hand-drive (the steering-column gearchange) which - if correct - might further complicate matters.

Me, I’d opt for a 4th rebuild of the cylinder-head, or - if the present one is beyond repair - replacement with another head. I would not consider replacing the complete motor unless this was unavoidable and I’d definitely not attempt a transplant involving a significantly different motor.

Judging from the pic you posted you've got a tidy camper there B-) ........

I'd go the rebuild by a reputable firm route .........Why not get a quote? ;-).......

Thanks for the replies, new the forum. So the problen first started when my dad put washer fluid into the coolant reservoir. AA came and drained it but forgot to put a clip on 1 of the pipes and it came off and blew the head. Got it fixed and the dad had the camper in france and it overheated and blew again. Reason not knowen. Then the clutch went. Got it fixed last year then one of the gears kept slipping and got it fixed. So this yeat it was working great. Dad had it in the west of ireland and on the way back doing 120 kmh the temp went up. He slowed down and temp went down. Information about the overheating was not passed onto me and after i soent the summer hetting it ready to take the 4 month old on a trip. Putting in seatbelts and roofrack for surfboard and ladder and new dash carpet we only got an hour outside Dublin and steam started blowing out of the expansion tank. Engine roasting but radiator cold and fans on rad not comming.on. In garage now and will find out whats wrong tomorrow.

Id love to put a dependable engine in it but it looks like ill have to go with the same engine....

These engines are usually sound for astronomical miles but it sounds as if when the first head - by head do you mean head gasket? - failed the head itself or the block may have become warped or distorted due to the excess heat.

In which case you will need an experienced engine rebuild specialist rather than a general mechanic to check the head, and block preferably, for true before spending any more money on it. That same experienced engine specialist will then know exactly what needs to be done to stop it happening again.

A common upgrade is to fit the later 1994 onwards Fiat Ducato 2.8 engine and gearbox with cable gearshift to the Talbots.

Trying to fix a U25 that has had numerous gasket failures is probably ill advised, the engines are not that good and hard to get spares for now.

Someone has even managed to fit a T5 Volvo engine and gearbox as well.

If you are on the Talbot Owners Forum members can download the guide which lists everything you need for the conversion and how to do it as well.

As it's blown 3 head gaskets I would suspect either a warped cylinder head or a crack, heads sometimes crack near the valve seats, they runs fine until under heavy load or long motorway runs then the crack opens up.

Before getting it skimmed have it x rayed for cracks.
