Road to avoid!! Former East Germany

Hi

Avoid the Elbe ferry and 4km of cobbled road the other side near Wörlitz region Dessau in Germany. Photo uploaded. The connection road on the opposite bank is 4km of rough cobbles and had everything flying around in our poor old Flash 02. Even at 5 - 10 mph.

Would be a good adventure though if you have a sturdy vehicle. I don't think we did any lasting damage but I won't be repeating the route anytime soon. My Garmin NAvi was to blame.

Regards

Alan

Dessau is former DDR and it's not unusual to find sections of these roads still around. Often just short stretches so are fine to drive though they do discourage speeding!

Here is one in Sachsenhausen; http://oi57.tinypic.com/6izpl4.jpg

But by contrast this one here is in Sulingen, lower Saxony region of Germany which was never part of DDR! http://oi57.tinypic.com/f4k7s6.jpg That runs through the main part of the town, a very attractive town too with superb bars and restaurants. It has the desired effect of keeping traffic speed down. Here in UK we slap in speed humps to scrape front valances or worse still, damage sumps.

edit* I just remembered you live in Switzerland! http://siesta-serene.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/la-gruyere-cobble-stoned-road.html :D :D

Hi Bullet

Thanks for the links. Yes, I'm familiar with some of the 'Pflastersteinstrassen' in Switzerland and Germany but this one was really extreme with very rough sharp cobbles. Imagine 4 km of speed bumps every few inches!

I remember being in the former DDR with my car in 1992 shortly after the reunion with the west and experienced large holes even on the main roads. My wife tells me, that even after all these years of repair, arguments about council boundaries can result in short stretches of road falling into bad condition.

I've spent years trawling around former DDR as it's long fascinated me. Pre '89 i regularly used to tune in to Radio Berlin International on short wave to listen to the anti-west rhetoric. Somewhere in the house i've got souvenier tat RBI sent me, flags, badges and even a carrier bag! Of course, our own media pumped out anti-communist propaganda too, but RBI and Radio Tirana (Albania) were much more fun to listen to!

This is another form of 'cobble' you can still see, usually found in remote country areas of DDR; http://oi62.tinypic.com/2d6kys2.jpg Tank tracks East Germany built to patrol their border. They are actually quite good to drive on and can provide a useful off road direction to wild camp. The Harz mountain area is one of my favourites and this is a stock photo i found on Google images.

Surely can't be as bad as your average Belgium road. :D

If referring to the sections of pave i'd say that's even worse as you drive it at 50 -70mph and the constant thud thud noise is mind numbing!
