nyk
Does anyone have experience of fitting a tuning box to the Boxer 100 or 110bhp van or the same engine in Ford Transit? I am considering the TDI box with Turbo boost.
Steve928
There is a known weakness in the piston crown of early Puma engines and any deviation from the standard injector pressure or pattern can lead to holed pistons. The Transit 140bhp version has been the worst affected while the lower output versions have seen correspondingly fewer failures. Personally I'd leave well alone. Derek Uzzell
A Ford ‘recall’ is mentioned here http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/arb-trucks/90705-factory-recall-transit-pistons.html so it might be worth anyone with a Transit-based motorhome and 2.2litre motor checking with a Ford dealership about this. (I’ve no idea whether this is relevant to vehicles that have variants of the Puma motor but are not Ford-branded.)
Steve928
Derek Uzzell - 2015-11-07 9:35 AM (I’ve no idea whether this is relevant to vehicles that have variants of the Puma motor but are not Ford-branded.) Peugeot/Citroen didn't issue a recall and neither have I heard anything regarding Fiat (who fiited the Puma engine at 100bhp to the Ducato in Euro4 guise) but then these lower output engines don't seem to have suffered that badly from the problem. I'm only aware of one failure from amongst our number and that was poor old Geoff whose 100bhp 2.2L Puma-engined Ducato expired in France: http://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/Blown-Engine-in-France/32881/ My understanding (and nobody seems to have definitive information regarding this) is that revised pistons were fitted from c. 2012 onwards so most Euro5 engines should be OK. A post in your linked thread mentions that the recall is in fact merely a reprogramming to change the injector spray pattern to eliminate hotspots and this is borne out by the information in this mega-thread from our German motorhoming friends which is well worth putting through a translator and has some graphic pictures of cracked and holed pistons. It's currently on 220 pages and counting and rarely drops off the Wohnmobilforum front page. https://www.wohnmobilforum.de/w-t70226.html
