waeco monitor problem

I've joined this forum after finding numerous posts about waeco reversing cameras as I'm having a problem with mine and can't find any information about fixing them.

My monitor seems to of given up working as I have checked all the wiring and fuses and they are all ok.

It is a waeco rv-70 if that helps.. Has anyone else had this problem? I don't want to buy another monitor at 300 pounds as the system is old and the quality is low compared to the kits available nowadays in hd for less than 200 pounds! Is it possible to repair the monitors?

Thanks

What makes you think the monitor has failed? Is the screen completely blank or, if you look very closely at it, can you just make out a dim image from the camera?

You say it is an old system, but how old? If it dates from around 2007 it probably has a small fluorescent tube to light the screen and these are not, AFAIK, replaceable. More recent systems have LED backlighting, which is probably equally non-replaceable, but are supposed to last a lot longer.

You may find it difficult to wire the Waeco camera to a different make of monitor, as I believe there is no standardisation as to which wire in a connector is allocated to what function.

You may be able to wire up your own connector if you are adept with a soldering iron, and can find which wires should be connected within the connectors.

You may be able to get adaptor cables with connectors already configured for your (presumably Waeco) camera and whatever new monitor you buy. The monitor supplier should be able to advise if these are available.

The RV-70 monitor is (apparently) still available, but it’s certainly not cheap

Repair of Waeco monitors was asked about in this 2012 discussion

http://www.wildcamping.co.uk/forums/wild-camping-motorhome-chat/20040-waeco-reversing-camera-repair.html

but as far as I’m aware nobody offers repairs for genuinely ‘broken’ monitors (probably because it would not be financially worthwhile). As starvin marvin says, Conrad Anderson should be able to advise on this.

If it turns out that the monitor is ‘dead’, the choice will be to replace the monitor and keep the present camera and cabling, to replace the monitor and camera but retain the present cable, or to replace the complete system. As Brian suggests Waeco markets adapters to facilitate the 1st and 2nd approaches.

I fitted a complete Waeco camera system (with RV-70 monitor) to my 2005 Hobby motorhome, and my current Rapido 640 has a Waeco CAM50 camera linked to a (loathsome) in-dashboard Pioneer unit. I never found the picture-quality of the RV-70-based system lacking (though it wasn’t ideal for use as a rear-view ‘mirror’) and it definitely produced a superior image to that provided on the Pioneer’s screen. I did consider replacing the Rapido’s camera system with one better suited to rear-view-mirror usage, but eventually decided against this. If I had done this I would have replaced the original camera and cabling and fitted a separate monitor.

If you are certain you have power to the monitor (Power light on) and you have a black screen it is a pretty good bet the monitor is broken.

If you have a blue screen this usually implies there is no video signal from the camera.

As Brian states if you know the pin-outs of the wiring connectors it is perfectly feasible to solder together an adapter cable to connect to a new monitor.

Depending on your location I may be able to point you in the direction of an auto electrician who could perform this function.

We have repaired these monitors before, depends on the issue whether it is cost effective. Worst case should be able to create you an interface to a budget Chinese screen?

Just send us the screen to test and we will get back with a quote to repair. If you don't like the quote we will return it to you at our cost, as per most of our repairs.

Just include a note of the fault and contact details. Posting, packing and address details here : http://www.aandncaravanservices.co.uk/contact-us.php
