Mike B.
Wonder if anyone can throw any light on something I've wondered about for last few years? About 20Km north of Teruel on the A23 (Zaragoza-Valencia motorway) way up in the mountains there is a small aerodrome/runway with what looks like 1 Hanger and LOADS of aeroplanes. There is no control tower as such and nothing that resembles military and these planes all look like commercial planes. Does anyone know what they are? Is it a plane scrapyard? Is it a refurb centre etc? There doesn't seem to be any logical explanation why they are there and it certainly can't need that many planes in that area! Any information would be appreciated as it is driving us mad with curiosity here Thanks Mike
Tracker
That's just reminded me to have alook as we saw it too! Our mutual friends Google and Google maps provided the answer as so often they do! Try 'Caude Spain' in Google maps Earth view and this reference via Google and all will be revealed! http://www.airportspotting.com/spotting-at-teruel-airport/

Rayjsj
Slightly off subject, but close. During my working life as a computer engineer (they were steam powered then) I used to travel over much of southern Britain, on taking a cross country route once I rounded a corner to see the unmistakable sight of a Comet 4 tailpane looming above me, Yes, I was passing Lasham in Hampshire, I took my dinner break to have a good look around, it was DAN-AIR 's Storage and maintenance site, and was a busy glider airfield too, with a large wartime runway, capable of receiving modern jet airliners, there were several Comets there in Dan-air livery, a Brittania (remember them) ,a Dakota, And rarest of all a Lancastrian, the civilian version of the Lancaster bomber, in Dan-Air livery, hope it survived ? Turned into a very enjoyable day (if you like that sort of thing). I often went passed there again. But not for over 20 years, anyone else know if any of the planes still exist? Ps I would enjoy visiting Teruel and also the plane graveyard/storage area in the desert in Arizona.
colin
Rayjsj - 2016-02-03 9:48 AM anyone else know if any of the planes still exist? Do you mean those specific aircraft, or that type of aircraft? ScM Wroughton has a Comet 4 from Dan (D)Air. Don't think there are any Lancastrian's left, there are a few Lancasters and there is an ex Dan Air York at Duxford. A Britania is also at Duxford.(the actual first civil aircraft I flew in) Will be 'playing around' with a Dakota later today.
Rayjsj
Thanks Colin, yes, they probably are the one's from Lasham, didn't see the York on my visit though. I once raced at Wroughton in Wiltshire, sidecar road racing, very long staight, down the main runway. It was an RAF hospital reception Base then, we were Club racers, and the Royal Airforce had it's own motor/motorcycle sports club, circuits included Wroughton, Staverton,Llandow, We raced a Vincent black lightning outfit, then a Hillman imp engined outfit. Good times.
colin
The last time I worked at Wroughton 1999(? ), most of the site was ScM reserve collection, with IIRC a couple of buildings for industrial use. The hospital was a separate compound and still in use with helicopters in and out on a regular basis.

sshortcircuit
I have passed that spot a few times and wondered why which has now been answered. An absolutely super part of Spain with lovely countryside. Will pass that way in May and will now be fully informed.
PJay
Are you asking about the airport at Alberracin ? This is west of Teruel . This one appears to have mainly small planes , and looks like a private club, though it is signposted from the motorway as an airport. We stayed at and AcSI site there in 2014, and you drive past , to get to the site. Interesting area if you have transport, or enjoy walking. Site was pleasant, not too big, with views of the monastery. Worth a detour id around that way PJay
Mike B.
Thanks Tracker & Keith for the information/Link (why didn't I think of Google?-must be an age thing!) Nothing like the sinister ideas I had imagined about preparation for war!!! As a note-it looked so much different this year bathed in sunshine compared with this time last year deep in snow. Paul M Who
Thanks for jogging my memory. I too remember this place. We drove along its length last year to and from Albarracín. I thought it was strange at the time, though I can't remember seeing any aircraft parked or otherwise.
