Iceland escorted tour

Hi Bernard,

We did exactly this same journey last year and I too asked for advice from the forum and got some very useful replies and then followed up with the sites, etc we actually used.

Have a read of this thread for info...

PS Have you already booked the tour or are you still thinking about it?

Keith.

Edit to add, a bit of useful info in this thread actually on Iceland...

Thanks, I will look at the links.

Still undecided about booking the tour. We are very keen but as I have only travelled on the continent in France I am not sure about travelling through the Netherlands and Germany. We will have to make up our minds in the next day or so.

Travelling through The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark was very, very easy.

We took the overnight ferry to Hook of Holland then spent 2 days driving to Hirtshals at a leisurely 50 mph (it was a weekend so very few trucks on the road). We then had a rest day looking around the Jutland before catching the ferry the following day. It really was that simple, and it was our first ever venture abroad!

To try and give you an idea of distances we covered 900 miles by the time we got on the ferry, then 1,800 miles on Iceland, another 200 miles on the Faroese followed by around another 900 getting home. So in total 3,800 in exactly 5 weeks. But it was a fabulous experience which we plan to repeat in a couple of years time.

Do it, you'll enjoy it!!!

I would suggest that having driven in France you would have no problems driving in The Netherlands or Germany. Traffic signs these days are fairly universal so there should be no surprises.

Who is the 'escort'? We are interested in visiting Iceland but are undecided if that should be escorted or independently.

Cattwg,

IMO the C&CC organised tour is more geared up for Caravans then MH's!

Looking at last years tour they spent several days on each site going out 'sightseeing' each day. We prefer to keep moving on and by using the Camping Card Iceland we did our own tour at a fraction of the cost of the C&CC. Think less than half!

Search the forum as several members have been recently and posted a wealth of information.

Hi

You don't need an escort to drive around Iceland. I looked at the tours and decided they were very expensive for what they offer.

Driving in Iceland is easy with mostly empty roads, plenty of campsites to stay, lots of fuel and food available PLUS they all speak English.

It's easy to book the ferry.

The advantage of going solo is that, if you don't like somewhere you can move on. EG most of these Tours stop at lake Myrvtn for two or three nights - we rocked up, looked at the mossies and people wearing nets over their heads, and moved after one night.

On the plus side it's a brilliant country, all the little towns have a swimming pool, many have a campsite with electricity and showers and some of these sites are free or very cheap. Lots of wifi mostly free.

We will go again in a few years.

Have a great trip

Thanks for the comments. We signed up with the C+CC a few days ago though perhaps we should have waited until we had read all the comments!

However, I am sure that it will be a great experience and we are really looking forward to the trip.
