Fiat Ducato 160 multi jet water ingress engine

Can anybody help...please.

We purchased new 2008 Swift Bolero 680 FB. Just recently had a hazard warning light on dashboard, we took it in for MOT & service last week, which was carried out by BT fleet. ( whilst under warranty we had it done under Fiat garage ) BT did diagnostic check & result was we need new throttle body due to the water ingress into the engine compartment & we decided then to take it to the Fiat garage, cost is £588. They have contacted Fiat, Italy & UK over a week ago as of yet no reply apart from we actually got a case number ourselves, Have been on different forums & this seems to have been a common fault both with 160 & 130 Fiat engines. Am looking to get something back on warranty also just as important the modification, which I understand is an engine cover ( now as standard )

Has anybody had the same problem, if so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

You are quite correct that there have been a lot of issues with the throttle bodies on early (2006 to 2009) Ducato's with 2.3 and 3.0 engines, and you are also correct in that there is a continuing problem with water ingress to the engine compartment. There was no top cover fitted to vehicles before 2008 and yours must have been built in 2007 to have missed this modification but anyone that complained had one fitted for nothing, so you might be able to get that from Fiat; it's surprising that your Fiat dealer did not get that sorted out for you while it was in for service!

The misconception though is that the water ingress has caused the throttle body problem. It has not; so BT fleet are wrong about that i am afraid. It's easy to blame the water for everything! The good news is that the later design will not only work properly but will probably improve throttle response and fuel economy. You may need a new EGR control solenoid as well, and we would tend to fit one of those first and see how things go before doing the bigger job. In some cases that is all that you need and in almost all cases you need one as well so it's a good place to start.

Thanks Nick

Our van is in Fiat garage at the moment. We decided to go ahead with the new throttle body, we took it in yesterday & we haven't heard anything from them today so we will question them about the EGR control solenoid. Assuming we will have to pay for new throttle body our main concern now is we will need engine cover to stop recurrence of the problem.

Hope the Fiat garage will sort this for us.

Have been on web for Fiat suppliers but none seem to have the covers in stock.

If you have been taking the van to a Fiat Prof dealer for servicing during the warranty period surely you should be asking them why they didn't provide the engine cover. The same should apply to the throttle body - another known fault.

Yes we did take the van to a Fiat garage during the 3 years warranty. Then started to use BT Fleet for MOT & service as it was more convenient.

The Fiat garage we used gave up the Fiat dealership for motorhome / commercial vehicles due to lack of space. The Fiat garage where the van is now, the service manager has been in touch with Fiat England warranty dept ( we have a case number ) & has also spoken to Fiat in Italy but as of yet no joy with either.

We have told the garage to go ahead as whatever happens we need to get the motorhome repaired.

If we don't have any joy with Fiat we will try office of fair trading ( motor trade association)

It may be one of these occasions ' those who shouts loudest'
