thomasplc
Hello I have recently bought a Hymer T588 SL this has an AL-KO chassis . Do I have to take it to an Al-ko dealer for service or can the Fiat dealer grease the axle when it goes for service, if so will the warranty be affected? Many thanks
Robbo
Don't think you'll find many ALCO dealers around. A Fiat professional dealer should be able to do it as part of the service. However, best to ask them if they've done this before as they need to use the recommended grease and ideally use a hand operated grease gun with something like 10 shots per nipple. Also, the wheels need to be off the ground when they do it.
Derek Uzzell
Most, but not all, AL-KO rear axles needs greasing. If the axle has grease nipples it can and should be greased: if there are no grease nipples the axle does not need greasing. AL-KO’s advice about greasing can be found here http://www.al-ko.co.uk/pages_faqs/axles-2.html http://www.al-ko.co.uk/edit/files/handbooks/amc-handbook.pdf The recommended procedure prior to greasing involves the vehicle’s chassis being lifted so that the rear wheels ‘hang’ clear of the ground (ie, so that no weight is being placed on the tyres). Greasing an AL-KO axle will not be part of a standard Fiat service. A Fiat agent may be prepared to grease the axle if asked to do this, but may be unfamiliar with the procedure involved or not have the appropriate grease. Motorhome dealers are more likely to be familiar with AL-KO axles and how to treat them, but greasing may not be included in a ‘habitation’ service. (This is how AL-KO axles have ended up not being greased, as neither the agent for the base-vehicle, nor the motorhome dealership automatically takes responsibility for the greasing.) If there’s any doubt, ask...

Derek Uzzell
AL-KO’s UK website has a locator feature that lists service centres by county/area. Many of these will be more appropriate for servicing/repair of AL-KO caravan chassis, but some will be familiar with and able to service AL-KO motorhome chassis. http://finder.al-ko.co.uk/
