Smelly diesel heater

Hi

When we start up the diesel heating and when we turn it off we get a strong smell of diesel. It is fine once it has been on for a couple of minutes or so and soon goes again when switched off.

Does anyone else have this and is it normal?

thanks

We did very occasionally but it soon dispersed. I checked for leaks and there were none.

Sometimes the wind direction can blow fumes back in via the air intake, or a window or door, and as you can certainly smell the oil from outside the van when it first fires up it is not unheard of.

Neverthelss as Ray suggests I would get it checked for peace of mind as, without being paranoid, a little bit of burning oil in the wrong place can do a lot of damage.

If it's only for a minute or so then it's not a big problem. When the heater is trying to fire up, there's a little bit of excess fuel, same when it switches off.

If it lasts longer than a maximum of 2 minute's then don't use it and get some ventilation in, you will need advice. Best place to go to would be a Iveco Truck Garage, They will be authorized to work on the night heaters in trucks.

What Rich (Tracker) said about the wind direction could be right, but if it's doing it just on start up and stop, then it's usually a little bit of warm unburnt fuel and that is natural.
