Tranzit motors

Hi.I own a 2009 Ford Tranzit Trendscout motor home which was built in Germany for the UK market.

I bought it off a German man, who imported it to New Zealand when it was 6 months old and had travelled

3500 miles.I have owned it since then and have had no problems till a week ago whilst on holiday it blew the turbo, which has resulted in motor damage to at least no.2 piston.

The motor is a 2.2 ltr Diesel 140 motor which has more grunt than a Russian tennis player.

I tow my 5.5 mtr boat behind this van a bit and it still has plenty of power.Boat weights aprox 1.2 ton.

I have always used clean fuel and do regular servicing.

I had no warning of the turbo going.I just slowly ran out of power going up a slight hill.

The oil was sucked out of the turbo and ingested through the intake manifold, resulting in sudden over reving which I stopped by stalling the motor. Sadly to late I think.

The motor has only done 21000 miles which I would not have expected to have any sort of motor problems.

Has any one else had problems with these motors, or can through some light on why this may have happened.

I am 67 years old and I drive for a living.

I do drive this van "like I stole it " so it is not through making it lug up hills etc.

Any feedback would be very much appreciated.

Cheers Brendan.

Hi Brendan,

There have been numerous failures of the 2.2L PUMA motor in the Transit attributed to holed or cracked pistons. The cause is known to be poor injector spray pattern which overheats the piston crown - a revised piston was fitted from c. 2012.

If you are sure that your turbo blew first and caused the damage though then your failure may not be one of these cases.

A recent thread on here refers to this problem and contains a link to a German forum called 'Transitmotorschaded' i.e. Transit engine damge which you could put through a web translator.

http://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/15P08-TRANSIT-CAMPER-PCM-CALIBRATION/40812/

Again needing a translation there is also a very long-running thread entitled 'Ford Transit motor damage from injectors' here on one of the German motorhome forums where loads (and I mean loads..) of people with engines of similar age and mileage to yours have sufferred engine failures. It's worth noting that Ford often make a contribution to repair costs even with vans of that age.

Welcome to the Out&AboutLive forums, Brendan.

As Steve says, there is considerable history regarding piston/turbo failure of post-2000 Transit motors. It’s touched on here

http://engineengineering.co.uk/start/reconditioned-engines-rebuilt:298/ford-reconditioned-engines:330/ford-duratorq-22l-tdci:1053/

"Ford Transit 2.2 TDCi Injectors Over Fueling Problem

The Injectors Over Fuelling in Ford Transit engines becomes a commonly known engine problem of this Transit 2.2 TDCi Engine. What is actually happening is rather than injector being faulty the ECU causes the problem and there is wrong amount of diesel delivered - more than required. The outcome - in a large shortcut - is a problem with Engine Liners, the bores are being washed of oil and become more and more scratched, engine is loosing compression. On occasions pistons are being melted and fracturated due to heat exposure caused by diesel burning on the top surface of the piston ( due to over fueling problem ) rather than being sprayed in to combustion chamber of the pistons.”

and there’s a good deal of discussion about it on the Ford Transit forum

This 2013 forum discussion may be of interest to you.

http://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/Blown-Engine-in-France/32881/

It relates to a major failure of a Ford-built 2.2litre powerplant as fitted in the Ducato by Fiat for a while, but the motor is essentially the same as that used in Transit.

Thanks Steve & Derek.

Sorry I have been so long thanking you.

This motor is not fitted to NZ new Tranzits so your help has been great.

They have my motor out at an engine-rebuild shop but they have yet to

pull it down to see what has failed.

It is interesting reading about the ECU checks and resetting at servicing.

I have had my van serviced at the local Ford Dealer.

I bet they know nothing about this ECU reset.

I can get a brand new motor the same out of Australia for about $10000.00 NZ(5000.00 pounds aprox)

I would be reluctant to get one of these unless the problems have with them have been fixed.

It might be to repair mine and get rid of it.

I don't think I would have much joy with Ford as for one it is a 2009 model and secondly when I purchased it in early 2010 I asked Ford if the warranty could be transferred country to country

and they, unlike Toyota will not do this.

Many thanks again.

Brendan.
