Cassette toilet fluid

Hi Everyone,

Only just started motorhoming and wondered if anyone could give me some advice on toilet fluid.

we have only been away in our motorhome for max of 2 nights so far and obviously i used the toilet for pee pees and nothing else. and when i was reading the instructions on how much toilet fluid to put in the cassette it states you use 120ml i thouhgt this was a bit of a waste of chemical for just one night.

so do any of you guys use less if u are only using it for one night etc ?

thanks :-D

We have on a few occasions used none, for a days trip home, but we have partially filled the cassette with water.

Otherwise we only use biologically safe fluid additive. IMHO formaldehyde based chemicals are a NO! NO! particularly as we are not on mains drainage and cassette contents can end up in our septic tank.

I know of one UK site owner that had to employ a specialist contractor from 100+ miles away to dispose of toilet waste containing formaldehyde. Less aggressive toilet waste could use the same disposal as grey water, and be treated by the sites reed bed.

For just one night half fill the cassette with water and unless it is very warm or you have a curry supper probably no need for any chemicals and if you do feel the need you can always add a dollop.

I agree with Tracker. Even a few litres of water in the cassette should dillute the No 1's sufficiently prior to emptying on return the next day. If in doubt, half fill the cassette with water as recommended by Tracker.

For one night, I would do as Tracker says unless my wife was with me. Then I'd also use a spray mix of Aqua Rinse to leave the toilet bow smelling nice. After flushing, just give the toilet bowl a quick spray - indoor garden spray bottles are ideal.

Fit a SOG unit. You can still use chemicals if you want to but you don't have to. A simple unit you could fit yourself consisting of a air filter, a short length of tube and a small 12v fan. When you open the blade on your loo the fan draws air down through the bowl into the cassette and out through the filter usually mounted on the cassette door. Keep everything clean using water Including the filter which may need replacing from time to time

We use Elsan Blue, and have done for many years, must admit don't measure it very accurately. Have a Thetford version of the SOG, but still prefer to use Elsan. Only toilet fluid with a British Kitemark. Bought several 4 litre containers cheaply when they changed their container shape, don't buy 5 litre containers of Elsan, they are fakes.

Not a fan of Thetford blue or their pink rinse, does not kill bacteria, and allows Black Bits (bacteria & mould) to form in holding tanks (if you have one for the rinse water) Elsan Pink does kill it.

We too prefer the Elsan to the Thetford Blue and even if you pay around £14 for a 4 litre pack - and we never pay that much - and use up to 150 cc per refill you will still get about 26 changes per bottle.

That works out at a maximum of about 54p per change - probably less and certainly less if you put less in for one night - is that really too much to bear for one nights pongless use?

Thanks for the advice guys. Much appreciated. I think I will just use 2 litres of water for a 1 night stay (and obviously use my pink toilet bowl spray) and for anything longer use thereford green cassette tank fluid appropriately depending on how long we are staying :-D

Lidl - whose Bio Laundry Liquid comes in huge containers at low low prices - also sell Persil Laundry liquid in 1 lire bottles. When empty remove the plastic label/sleeve and you have a handy 1 litre bottle with 75ml measuring cap.

2 caps of liquid to a 1 litre bottle - fill with water - 2 or 3 bottles stashed away in the gas locker or wherever.

So, no more fiddling around pouring liquids down the spout while it swings sideways. Just refit cassette, open flap and poor in one or 2 bottles of pre-mix. Kind of reminds me of the old days of mixing 20:1 two-stroke for the Bantam (that's a motorbike for younger readers - before the days of pump fed 2T) :-D :-D :-D
