snowie Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 We would like to visit Mulhouse and Schlumpf museum and maybe the Notre Dame du Haut at Ronchamp on the way down to Italy. 8 weeks there and back; we think. I didn't enjoy our route through Austria to Croatia in 2012 as there were too many long and badly lit tunnels( A8/A9 Graz ). I know we wouldn't go that far over to the east. Maybe head for Lake Garda for a start. Can anyone suggest a more westerly route into Italy that involves minimal tunnels? Thanks alan b (A toss-up; hairpin bends or tunnels?) (Coming back via Monaco and Marseilles maybe)
nowtelse2do Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Alan, are you dawdling down, short or longer route (scenic). allow yourself at least 6hrs at the Schlumpf Museum. There is a superb restaurant there but very pricey (waiter service) but you can use the cafe which was good value, it must have been because the museum manager eats there. I told him that I'd noticed there wasn't any TR6's there and offered to do a straight swap for anyone of his Bugattis, seeing he had so many left over, he thanked me for the offer but declined it. Dave
snowie Posted February 28, 2016 Author Posted February 28, 2016 Hi Dave, I think we'll speed down to the Schlumpf area and spend 2, maybe 3 nights in the area and then give the lakes a try. I think our starting point will be the Amalfi Coast, having been to most of the sights before that, cheers alan b
nowtelse2do Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 So Reims, Troyes, Langres then a stop somewhere around Belfort to see Notre Dame du Haut and the Museum. I've never stopped around here so can't help with any site's. The nearest one I've used was about 15 km east of Remiremont on the D417 just before Gerardmer, nice pleasant site but nothing special, I would use it again if in the area. From Mulhouse then down to Basle then it's just a case of following road 2 through Switzerland, Milan to Lake Garda. Very busy Alan in June-till end of August. You will have to go through the St Gothard tunnel but that is well lit, no problems there. You can stop off at Lake Como, that is a beautiful area and I believe a few site's there but I've never used them, just lazily passed through once. Sorry not to have got back earlier but i had to go out ;-) Dave

Basel is the major crossing point into Switzerland and there are usually big queues at Basel and this route misses them. It's also a very pleasant drive through the forested countryside on the east banks of the Rhine - Plus the Swiss border guards are much more polite at Rheinfelden! The route is on this google maps linkhttps://goo.gl/maps/9tLqYygxzGr
nowtelse2do Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 True Jeremy, I've been both ways but only through Basle once and that was on a weekend. I had no problems and straight through after getting the vignette. Going the other way would take longer Jeremy, but yes nicer. Dave
nowtelse2do Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Jeremy, it might be better to cross the Rhine from Mulhouse then head South and come off for Lorrach, pass there then down to Rheinfelden if Alan cross's during a weekday. Dave Ah! sorry, that's what you were saying, I kept to the west side of the Rhine and crossed over where the Airport is *-)
